Dr. Brett Monaghan enters his ninth year as Indian Hills Community College's Athletic Director and third as the school’s Vice President of Student Development & Operations. 
 
Monaghan oversees the department's 19 varsity sports, including 16 that compete at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I level. Under Monaghan's guidance, Indian Hills has continously grown its sport offerings at the campus. The department debuted its men's and women's wrestling programs during the 2020-21 academic year and have also added the Indian Hills Sports Shooting, Competitive Cheer and Dance programs, the indoor and outdoor track & field programs, and the department's most recent offering, women's golf.
 
The Indian Hills Athletic Department has reached new heights under Monaghan's leadership, excelling both in the classroom and on the playing surfaces. The Warriors have captured nine national championships since Monaghan headed the department - five women's wrestling national championships, two competitive cheer and dance national championships, and two NJCAA DI Men's Golf Championships. The department has amassed hundred's of academic All-Region and NJCAA All-Academic individual and team honors along with a bevy of national award recognitions. 
 
Monaghan has also overseen renovations to a number of the facilities in the athletic program, most recently dramatic upgrades to the softball field and Tom Arnold Net Center on the Ottumwa campus and significant improvements to the indoor and outdoor baseball facilities in Centerville, as well as the building of the new wrestling practice facility, and revamp of the baseball lockerroom and Centerville weightroom.
 
Monaghan came to Indian Hills as an assistant baseball coach before the start of the 2012 spring season. He joined the IHCC baseball staff after five years as the head coach at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant. Monaghan was the first coach at Iowa Wesleyan to surpass 100 victories and had a career record of 148-111, the winningest baseball coach in school history. He was named the conference Coach of the Year his final two seasons and his 2011 squad won the regular-season and tournament championships in the league and qualified for the NAIA National Tournament. Ten of Monaghan’s players at IWC signed professional contracts and 23 earned first-team all-conference honors.
 
Monaghan’s resume also includes positions as an assistant baseball coach at Marshalltown Community College and in the high school ranks, as a scout for the Cincinnati Reds, and a stint at the Ripken Experience, a youth baseball facility in South Carolina, working closely with Hall of Famer Cal Ripken and his brother Billy.
 
Along with Monaghan's duties at Indian Hills, the tenured athletic administrator oversees and collaborates on the national level. Monaghan has served as the NJCAA Division I Softball Committee Chair for five consecutive years, dating back to the 2018-19 academic year. In 2022, Monaghan was also selected by a national committee to chair the NJCAA Women's Wrestling Committee in the sport's first year of existence as a sanctioned NJCAA sport. Monaghan leads a group of committee members for each sport that oversees national championship processes, sport policies and procedures, All-American selections, and postseason at-large and seeding selections, among other duties. 
 
Monaghan also serves as the NJCAA Region 11 Women's Director that represents the state of Iowa and the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference on the national level. As part of his duties within the ICCAC, Monaghan also serves on the conference's Appeals Committee.
 
Monaghan earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Northern Iowa and completed his doctoral degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Iowa State University. He and his wife Sadie have two daughters, Vada and Sylvie, and a son, Gavin.
