Falcons Swept by Iowa Western

Baseball

Council Bluffs, Iowa -- Iowa Western won all four games in a series that started the conference schedules for both the Reivers and Indian Hills.  The Reivers took both games of a Friday twinbill, 5-3 and 8-2, then completed the four-game sweep with 2-1 and 7-0 victories on Monday after those games were pushed back because of wintry weather conditions over the weekend.

The IHCC offense was held in check by Iowa Western pitching.  The Falcons managed only 13 hits and 6 runs in the four contests.

The series started off okay for Indian Hills.  Justin King had a two-run homer in the first game on Friday, bringing home Ryan Humeniuk, who had walked, for a quick 2-0 lead.  Hagen Holmstead gave IWCC the lead with a three-run homer off Caleb Miley in the 3rd and the Reivers tacked on two insurance runs in the 6th.  After the King home run, Indian Hills had only two more hits -- a double by Jay Hester and a single by Jameson Hart.  Falcons hitters struck out 15 times against a trio of pitchers.  Miley threw 83 pitches in a route-going effort, giving up eight hits with two Ks.

Indian Hills once again scored two first-inning runs in game two, then was blanked the rest of the way.  RBI singles by Humeniuk and Zachary Fascia accounted for the early runs and 2-0 advantage.  Iowa Western jumped ahead with a five-run 3rd inning and added three runs in the 4th.  King had a single and a double for the Falcons, who were limited to five hits.  DJ Depiero started and took the loss for IHCC.  Both Yasiel Valdez and Rodny Valdes threw a scoreless inning of relief.

The Falcons had trouble generating any offense in Monday's games with a total of only five hits and a lone run.  King doubled and came home on a sacrifice fly by Hart to put Indian Hills on top 1-0 in the 4th inning of the opening game.  The Reivers tied the score at one in the bottom of the frame and scored the game-winner in the 6th in the 2-1 final.  Declan Buckle stroked a single for the only other IHCC hit.  Rodny Valdes allowed a solo homer to Ryan Sullivan in the 6th for the game-deciding tally.  Valdes gave up six hits, didn't walk anyone and struck out three in 5 1/3 innings.

Iowa Western pushed across single runs in the first three innings of game two and finished off the Falcons with a four-run 6th.  IHCC had singles from Will Zimmerman, King and Christian Pena for its only offense.  Yasiel Valdez, the first of four Indian Hills pitchers, went two innings and was tagged with the loss.

Looking to get untracked in league play, Indian Hills (13-12) will take on Southwestern CC in doubleheaders on Thursday and Saturday.
