Fascia, King, Humeniuk Lead IHCC All-Region Picks

Baseball all-region

Centerville -- A trio of Indian Hills sophomores -- Zachary Fascia, Justin King and Ryan Humeniuk -- were named to the All-Region XI first team as announced by the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference.  The Falcons also placed sophs Rodny Valdes, Christian Pena and Will Zimmerman and freshman Jay Hester on the all-league second team, and sophomores DJ DePiero and Yasiel Valdez and freshman Jet Weber made the Honorable Mention list.

Fascia and Humeniuk are the repeat selections from the 2017 all-region squad, both moving up from the second team.

The regular catcher for the Falcons who also pitched 13 times in relief,  Fascia was selected as the region's Defensive Player of the Year for the second year in a row.

A three-time Division I Player of the Week, Fascia led the Falcons and was 6th in the conference with his .364 batting average.  He led the league in doubles with 18 and also slammed five homers while driving in 48 runs.  Defensively, Fascia threw out 12 baserunners and had a fielding percentage of .978.  He had nine saves as the Indian Hills closer, compiling a 3.00 ERA with 17 strikeouts in his 12 innings pitched.

King topped IHCC with his 13 homers and led the conference in extra-base hits with 35.  He had 15 doubles and a team-leading seven triples and his .701 slugging percentage also led Indian Hills.  In addition he drew 37 walks and was a standout on defense with only one error.

With team highs in five offensive categories, Humeniuk started every one of IHCC's 58 games and batted .348.  He paced the squad in at-bats (201), runs (62), hits (70), RBIs (69) and total bases (131).  His 69 runs-batted-in were the most in the ICCAC. 

Valdes posted a 4-3 record and 3.60 ERA with team highs in strikeouts (64) and innings pitched (60) while starting 11 games.  Pena hit .322 with 28 runs scored and 39 RBIs.  Among his 47 hits, were nine doubles, a triple and four home runs.  Zimmerman, a two-year starter, finished with a .319 batting average and a team-best on-base percentage of .495 that was helped by the fact he was hit by a pitch 26 times.  The speedy infielder also stole 22 bases in 24 attempts, scored 45 runs and drove in 36.

Hester, one of two IHCC freshmen to gain all-region honors, batted .301 with 45 runs and 22 RBIs as was selected to the second team as an outfielder.  He was second on the Falcons with 13 stolen bases in as many attempts.

A sophomore lefthander, DePiero led the pitching staff with seven victories.  He was 7-4 with a 4.11 ERA.  He punched out 61 hitters and allowed only 37 hits in his 50 innings pitched.  Valdez, a righty, had a 3.15 ERA and a 3-3 record in 40 IP.

Weber, the other freshman from Indian Hills honored, hit .330 in 29 games.  He scored 20 runs and had 30 hits and a .440 on-base percentage.
