Centerville -- Nick Green, who used a superb season at Indian Hills to become a high draft choice of the Texas Rangers, was taken in the Major League Baseball Rule 5 Draft on Thursday.  Green was drafted out of the New York Yankees' minor league system by the Arizona Diamondbacks as one of 14 players selected in the annual Rule 5 Draft.

Green spent the 2018 season with the Yankees' minor league teams in Tampa (Class-A Advanced) and Trenton (Double-A) and was a starting pitcher in the Florida State League All-Star game.  He was promoted to Trenton not long after the All-Star appearance and won one game there with a 3.63 ERA.  The 23-year old Green, in his fifth season of pro ball in '18, started 20 games at Tampa and went 7-5 with a 3.28 ERA. 

In 2014 at Indian Hills, Green, a Colorado native, compiled a 6-2 record with a 4.37 ERA and fired a late-season no-hitter at Marshalltown. 

A starting pitcher throughout most of his pro career so far, Green will likely have to make the Diamondbacks' roster as a reliever.

Teams selecting a player in the Rule 5 Draft must pay $100,000 to the player's former team.  The selecting team must keep the player on their 25-man roster for the entire season with the player being active for a minimum of 90 days.  If the D'backs don't keep Green on the major league roster they must put him on waivers and if he clears he must then be offered back to the Yankees for $50,000.
