MORAVIA – Indian Hills played host for the first and last time this fall yesterday at The W at the Preserve meet on Honey Creek Resort’s Rathbun Lake, and the Warriors showed no hospitality on the scoreboard once again, as IHCC took home both the team and individual titles for the third time in three outings.
The Warriors proved up to the task of a long day of 36 holes as IHCC saw nearly every one of its seven golfers improve their score in the second round after posting solid first round marks.
“We had almost everyone beat their previous rounds score, and that is not easy to do,” remarked IHCC head coach John Mulholland. “Playing better than the previous round after a long day of competing is very satisfying.”
Ironically, the one golfer who didn’t improve from his 1st round total was eventual individual medalist Max Hartmann.
Hartmann fired a 4-under 68 in the opening round and followed up with a 71 to finish 5-under for the event, outdistancing teammate Harry Fearn by a single stroke for the individual title.
“That was incredible play from Max Hartmann, taking home his first individual win for Indian Hills,” added Mulholland. “I expect him to continue his great play into the next event at Drake.”
Sophomore Thomas Burou added a fourth-place finish to go along with back-to-back runner-up awards this fall with a 3-under 141 total for the day. Fellow sophomore, Antoine Sale, who had finished as the medalist in each of IHCC’s first two events, finished in sixth place at 2-under.
“Super impressive second rounds after a solid start to their opening 18 from Harry, Cyril, Antoine, and Thomas,” said Mulholland.
Sophomore Cyril Henault, while not factoring into the team score, finished tied for 2nd with Fearn with a 4-under par score of 140. Freshman Jake Calhoun had his best outing as Warrior as the West Des Moines Dowling product carded an even par 144 to finish in 7th place in the individual race.
“It was another amazing day in southern Iowa at The Preserve,” Mulholland said. “You’re never sure what you’re going to get with a home event as you’re always expected to play well and that adds pressure. But I think it’s a good thing when you have a team like we do. We could have very easily had multiple winners, but taking all of the hardware home this week is a great accomplishment for all involved.”
The Warrior head man glowed over how the home event went and the support that came with it.
“It was great to have a lot of our supporters and media coverage that came out and watched, and we can’t thank them enough. It felt great to have many spectators out at our home event.”
Indian Hills will catch its collective breath for a week now before taking part in the Zach Johnson Invitational, hosted by Drake University on Monday, September 28 and Tuesday September 29 at the Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines.
