IHCC Bounced From National Tourney

Nat'l Tourney

Hutchinson, Kansas -- A Kawanise Wilkins go-ahead layup in the final minute of overtime let Barton (Kans.) CC upset top-seeded Indian Hills, 85-83, in the Warriors' first test in the 2018 NJCAA National Tournament at the Sports Arena on Tuesday afternoon.  After Wilkins' bucket, Shane Gatling missed a chance to give IHCC the lead back as his runner in the lane was off the mark.  Wilkins rebounded the missed shot and was fouled with 4.6 seconds to play.  He missed his first try at the line and made the second giving the Warriors a chance to tie or win the game in the final seconds.  But Antonio "Booman" Williams was unable to get off a good shot after bringing the ball up the right sideline and Barton walked away with the victory.

James Jean-Marie had put Indian Hills ahead with a layup with 47 seconds left in OT.  The Warriors, though, came up empty on their two possessions after that basket.

Indian Hills was able to put together a monumental second-half comeback that saw them grab a five-point lead with 5:40 to play.  Jamel Allen's 3-pointer capped a 14-0 spurt and it appeared the Warriors' struggles through the first 24-plus minutes of action were finally behind them.  Barton, however, recovered in time to make it a close game over the final five minutes of the second half as neither team led by more than four points after Barton's Marvin Cannon stopped the IHCC run with a pair of free throws.

Cannon led all scorers with 35 points and also pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds for the Cougars (29-6), the No. 16 seed who won their second tournament game in as many days.

Gatling topped Indian Hills with 25 points, 17 of them coming in a 10-minute span in the second half.

The Warriors were down by 14 points at intermission and things didn't get any better over the first four minutes after halftime.  Cannon hit a pair at the line to give the Cougars a 53-32 bulge with 15:35 remaining.

With only 32 points to that juncture, Indian Hills finally exhibited what had made them a 33-0 team coming into the tournament.  The Warriors scored 37 points over the next ten minues, outscoring Barton 37-11, to turn things around.  Gatling had all three of his 3-pointers in that stretch and made six straight free throws.  His third three tied the score at 64-64.  A steal and layup by Devontae Lane gave IHCC its first lead of the game and Allen's triple made it 69-64.

Cannon scored the next four points for Barton, then Lane drained a 3-pointer to build the IHCC advantage back to four points.  The only field goal the rest of regulation came after a Williams steal and layup that gave Indian Hills a 76-73 lead with just under a minute to play.

Noah Webster's two foul shots with 38 seconds left cut the IHCC margin to one.  The Warriors missed a shot and Elijah Ford was fouled going for the rebound with 9.4 seconds on the clock.  Ford missed one and made one on his two attempts to tie the score at 76-all.  Lane's bid to win it at the buzzer for IHCC was off the mark and the teams went to OT.

In overtime, Gatling had two free throws to tie it at 78, Williams knotted things at 80 with a tip-in, Rob Montgomery hit a foul shot and Jean-Marie's go-ahead layup accounted for the only IHCC points.

Barton controlled the first half, scoring the first seven points and eventually leading by 14 at the break.  The Warriors made only eight field goals and just 2-of-11 from 3-point range in the opening period.  IHCC improved to 49 percent field-goal shooting in the second 20 minutes, then hit only 2-of-9 in OT.  Free-throw shooting also hurt the Warriors, who missed 15 and were just 11-of-26 when you take away Gatling's 12-for-12 showing.

Williams, one of nine sophomores whose Indian Hills career came to a close, scored 16 points, Lane had 12 and Tomas Woldetensae 11.

Keshon Montague scored 13 points and handed out 10 assists for the Cougars, who advance to take on Eastern Florida State in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
