All-American Honor for Gatling

Shane - AA

Ottumwa -- Shane Gatling, the leading scorer on an Indian Hills team that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, won its first 33 games and qualified for the school's fifth consecutive national tournament appearance, has been named a first-team All-American by the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Gatling, who played his freshman season at Niagara University before transferring to Indian Hills, averaged 16.6 points a game for the Warriors.  He tied the season record for 3-pointers, hitting 102 while shooting 39 percent from behind the arc.  The 6-foot-2-inch guard made at least one three in 32 of 34 games and scored in double-figures 28 times.

He capped his lone season at IHCC by scoring a team-high 25 points in the national tourney contest against Barton when he tied a school mark by sinking all 12 of his free-throw attempts.  He shot 85 percent from the line for the year.

Gatling earlier was named the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Division I Player of the Year and was a first-team all-region selection after helping Indian Hills win the league regular-season and post-season conference titles.

He is the 26th basketball All-American for Indian Hills and the 11th to garner first-team recognition.  This is the seventh year in a row that IHCC has had at least one All-American, a streak dating back to 2012 when Jameel McKay and Gary Ricks Jr. were honored.  McKay is the only two-time first-team All-American in program history.
