Ottumwa -- Indian Hills drained eight 3-pointers in the first half on the way to a 50-37 lead at intermission over visiting Moberly Area CC Saturday night. But the Warriors were just getting warmed up. They buried 11 threes over the final 20 minutes and walloped the Greyhounds, 114-88, in an inter-region shootout at the Hellyer Center.
The 19 3-pointers -- in 30 attempts -- were just two shy of the school record of 21, accomplished against Southeastern in 2016, and helped put an end to Moberly's 13-game winning streak. The Greyhounds hadn't lost since Indian Hills defeated them, 93-80, on Dec. 8 in Moberly. It was also the 6th consecutive victory for IHCC in the series, the 8th in a row at Hellyer.
Iziah James enjoyed the best night of his Indian Hills career, erupting for 32 points while nailing seven of his 10 tries from behind the arc and making nine of 10 free throws. The sophomore guard had plenty of support from the rest of the IHCC squad with six players reaching double figures.
Tomas Woldetensae's five threes gives him 89 for the season, sixth all-time at IHCC. He poured in 23 points. Tyon Grant-Foster chipped in 13, Lance Singh and Tyler Chisom had 11 apiece and Torrey Patton 10. Singh's total matched his season-high and came in the Warriors' 10th straight win. They haven't lost yet in 2019.
Moberly jumped out to a 9-2 lead. The Warriors tied things up twice -- at 14-all on a foul shot by Grant-Foster, and 16-16 when JD Muila scored inside. A 3-pointer by James gave Indian Hills a lead it would never relinquish and he added two more triples the remainder of the half, which ended with the Warriors ahead, 50-37.
IHCC put the visitors away with a barrage of treys after halftime. The Warriors started the final period with an 11-2 burst to build the advantage to more than 20 points.
The Greyhounds chopped the margin to 14 at 73-59, before Indian Hills unleashed another 3-point barrage, hitting four more to establish a 26-point lead. Woldetensae's triple put the Warriors at the century mark and they regained the 26-point difference by the final buzzer.
The Indian Hills onslaught offset the Greyhounds' one-two punch of Alonzo Verge and Sean Miller-Moore, who combined for 62 points. Verge had 36 and made all 14 of his free throws, and Miller-Moore added 26. While the Warriors were enjoying their best outside shooting night of the year, Moberly connected on only five of their 22 long-distance shots.
IHCC picked up its 22nd win in its first of two straight non-conference home games. The Warriors host North Central Missouri on Wednesday before heading to West Burlington on Saturday for a showdown with Southeastern, which trails IHCC by a half-game in the league standings.
