Marshalltown, Iowa -- Indian Hills sewed up its 12th straight conference regular-season championship and sophomore guard Chris Childs became the single-season leader in 3-pointers in a 92-58 dismantling of Marshalltown at the Student Activity Center Saturday night.
The win, the Warriors' 18th in a row against the Tigers, gave IHCC the league title with a 7-1 mark, a game better than Southeastern. Indian Hills hasn't finished out of the top spot in the ICCAC regular-season standings since the 2007-08 campaign and will have home-court advantage in this week's postseason tourney contests.
Childs drilled five threes, giving him 105 for the season, topping the previous record of 102 set by Dwight Hardy and matched two years ago by Shane Gatling.
Drake Jeffries also nailed five 3-pointers, pushing his season total to 77. He made four of his five treys in the first half while Childs connected on four of his five after halftime.
Marshalltown forged a 17-all tie on a three by Jaylin Scott before Tyrese Nickelson gave IHCC the lead for good. Nickelson's bucket started a 9-0 run and the Warriors ended the opening half with a 13-3 spurt to take a 20-point lead into halftime.
Tyon Grant-Foster contributed a three-point play to the 9-0 burst, on his way to a game-high 19 points. He also grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked three shots. Malique Jacobs equalled his season high with 15 points to match the total for Childs and Jeffries.
The Warriors sank five 3s in the opening minutes of the second half to grow the advantage to 29. They hit eight 3-pointers in each half, the total of 16 just two shy of the season high. They made over half of their shots from behind the arc -- 16-of-30 -- and shot 56.4 percent overall.
Scott had 16 points to pace MCC and Caleb Jacobs added 12.
With an overall record of 27-3, Indian Hills will await the winner of Monday's contest between Marshalltown and Northeast (Neb.) for a Wednesday night game at the Hellyer Center. The other game Wednesday will pit Southeastern against Iowa Western in West Burlington. If the Warriors win their Wednesday test they will host the SCC-Iowa Western victor Saturday night for the conference postseason crown.
