Shackleford, Ivlev Garner Conference Honors

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills freshmen Akean Shackleford and Gabriel Ivlev have been honored by the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference as Athletes of the Week. Shackleford, from Savannahlamar, Jamaica, earned one of the weekly awards, while Ivlev was saluted as the top goalkeeper in the league for the week ending Sunday.

Shackleford helped the Warriors recover from an 0-2 season start with a big week scoring-wise. He started with a late goal in what would be a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Hawkeye CC on Wednesday, then came back the following day with a hat trick in IHCC's initial win of the season, a 5-1 victory over MCC-Maple Woods. Shackleford capped his week with Indian Hills' first goal in a 2-1 decision against Marshalltown CC on Saturday, a loss that snapped MCC's 25-match win streak. The 5-11 freshman made an early statement toward another possible weekly honor Tuesday when he scored a pair of second-half goals in the Warriors' come-from-behind 4-2 win at NIACC. That gives Shackleford a team-leading seven goals and he has added two assists for 16 points. He also tops IHCC in shots with 28 and shots on goal with 17. His seven goals is tied for first in the nation in the NJCAA.

Ivlev was outstanding in helping put an end to MCC's long winning streak, stopping nine shots and permitting only a second-half goal to the Tigers. The freshman from Valencia, Spain was also the Warriors' goalkeeper in their earlier match with Hawkeye, recording two saves. For the season, he has posted a record of 2-2, allowing an averaging of two goals per contest.
