IHCC and Kirkwood Divide a Pair

Ottumwa -- After having its 12-game winning streak broken in game one, Indian Hills came back with a vengeance to gain a split in Friday's doubleheader with Kirkwood.  The visiting Eagles got a solo homer from Monika Bevans that was the difference in a 2-1 victory in the opener.  The Warriors responded with three home runs and pounded out a 10-2 decision in the nightcap.

Kirkwood broke on top in the first game and IHCC tied the score at 1-1 in the 4th inning when courtesy runner Alexis Vroegh, running for Lexi Smith who had doubled, came home on a sacrifice fly by Abby Straight.  Bevans' homer off Olivia Goodale the next inning was the game-winner.  The Warriors had a chance to tie or take the lead in the 6th, but back-to-back strikeouts left runners at 2nd and 3rd.  Smith and Jaylie Reints each had two hits for Indian Hills.

Smith belted a two-run homer to even the score in the second game at 2-all, then the Warriors exploded for six runs in the bottom of the 3rd.  The first five batters reached base and all of them scored.  Erin Kuba smoked a solo homer in the 4th inning, to go along with a double and triple she had in the game, and Carlyn Stanley's solo homer in the 5th ended the game early, pushing the lead to eight runs.  Stanley was stellar in the circle, permitting only one hit and fanning four.  Smith and Stanley had two-hit games and those two along with Taylor Jones and Kuba scored two runs.

It was the team-leading 10th homer of the spring for Smith.  Kuba's long ball was her 8th.

The Warriors, who hadn't lost since Mar. 9, are 25-6 following the split and will open conference play with a pair of games at Iowa Western next Wednesday.  Kirkwood suffered just its 3rd loss of the season.
