Straight Homer Nets 30th Win for IHCC Softball

Lake Land

Ottumwa -- Abby Straight's two-run homer in the bottom of the 7th inning allowed Indian Hills to sweep Tuesday's doubleheadear with Lake Land College and get the Warriors to the 30-win mark for the fourth consecutive season.

The walkoff blast over the left field fence by Straight gave IHCC a 9-8 win after they had taken a 5-3 decision in game one.

The comeback victory featured three IHCC two-run homers. Helaina Johnson and Cheyanne Bergert also went deep.  The Warriors took a seemingly comfortable 6-0 lead after four innings before the Lakers erupted for four runs in the 5th, one in the 6th and two, on a pair of solo home runs, in the top of the 7th.  Facing that deficit, Indian Hills got a leadoff single from Jaylie Reints followed by another single by Johnson. The two then pulled off a double steal with Reints coming home to make it 8-7.  Straight didn't waste any time ending the game with her shot to left.  IHCC pounded out a dozen hits, three of them by Bergert and two apiece for Reints, Johnson and Straight, who also scored three times.  Taylor DuBois picked up an RBI single.  Olivia Goodale, who came on in relief of the starter Straight, got the win.

Indian Hills led 5-1 into the 6th inning of the opener.  Lake Land got close with single runs in their final two at-bats, but Goodale, who replaced Carlyn Stanley in the circle in the 6th inning with two outs, shut the door in the 7th.  Lexi Smith knocked in two runs for the Warriors, who had five hits -- one each by Taylor Jones, Reints,  Johnson, Taylor Takushi and DuBois.  Reints drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Indian Hills has now won at least 30 games in all four seasons that Laura North has been head coach.  They were scheduled to take their 30-7 record to Southeastern for a conference doubleheader with the Blackhawks on Wednesday afternoon.
