Warriors' Kuba Has All-Around Special Day

Ottumwa -- On the 2nd Annual Strike Out Cancer Day, Indian Hills sophomore Erin Kuba, a cancer survivor herself, hammered three homers and drove in nine runs as the Warriors swept a league doubleheader with Marshalltown, 6-2 and 13-0.

Kuba was diagnosed with thyroid cancer when she was in 8th grade.  After a long recovery process she was able to resume playing softball and has had an oustanding two-year career at IHCC, punctuated by a superb sophomore campaign.

On Saturday, Kuba went 2-for-4 in game one with a home run and two RBIs.  She stepped it up a notch in the nightcap, drilling two more homers, going 3-for-4 and knocking in seven runs as the Warriors finished the sweep.

Taylor Jones, Taylor Takushi and Helaina Johnson all had two-hit games in the opener and Alexis Westercamp drove in two runs.  Abby Straight started in the circle and gave way to Olivia Goodale, who not only finished with three shutout innings but also blanked the Tigers in the next game, a four-hit complete-game effort.  Goodale didn't walk a batter in her eight innings and struck out five.

Kuba added a double to her pair of second-game home runs.  Jones had two hits and two runs and also stole her 46th base, breaking Toni Orr's IHCC single-season record of 45.  Jaylie Reints slammed a two-run homer and Taylor DuBois and Takushi scored twice.  Katelyn Banning had a double and two RBIs.

The results keep alive the Warriors' hopes of claiming another conference regular season championship.  They enter Sunday's twinbill against Iowa Western at Hellyer Field trailing the Reivers by one game in the battle for the crown and the top seed in the postseason tournament.
