Another ICCAC Title for Indian Hills Softball

DuBois

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills needed to win both games of Sunday's doubleheader with Iowa Western in order for the Warriors to leapfrog the Reivers and claim their fourth ICCAC regular-season championship in a row.  And that's exactly what the 17th-ranked Warriors did, knocking off No. 15 Iowa Western 6-1 and 12-5 to gain the crown and the top seed in next weekend's league postseason tourney, which Indian Hills will host at Hellyer Field.

IHCC moved into a tie with Iowa Western after taking game one.  Each team tallied a run in the 1st inning, then Indian Hills struck for four in the 2nd, three of the runs coming on a Taylor DuBois home run.  Erin Kuba continued her torrid hitting with a 2-for-3 performance and two RBIs to add to her team-leading total.  Taylor Jones scored twice in support of Olivia Goodale, who allowed just the first-inning run and four hits.  She struck out five and walked only one.

The Warriors didn't waste any time in jumping on the Reivers in the next game that would decide the ICCAC champion.  Kuba slammed a first-inning two-run homer with Jones aboard and Jaylie Reints followed with another home run for the quick start.  Indian Hills added two runs in the 3rd, one on a Helaina Johnson single to make it 5-0.  Iowa Western got on the scoreboard on Lily Gregory's three-run homer in the 4th, but Indian Hills responded with a Kuba RBI and a two-run single from Cheyanne Bergert.  Gregory accounted for all of the IWCC scoring, slugging a two-run home run in the 6th, but DuBois finished off the Reivers with her own homer in the bottom of the frame.  Jones singled twice and walked three times to set the table for IHCC.  Reints, Takushi and DuBois also had two hits.  Carlyn Stanley got the victory, going the first four innings.  Abby Straight ended it with three innings of relief.

The Warriors are now 43-8 overall, the most victories in 12 seasons, since the 2006 team went 46-16.  They won the conference with a 10-2 mark, losing only to Iowa Western by a run and Southeastern by two.  They took the other three games against both teams and swept all four with Marshalltown.

The three homers in the nightcap Sunday give Indian Hills 67 for the season.  Kuba leads the way with a dozen and Bergert and Lexi Smith each have 11.

The final regular season action for Indian Hills will come in a Tuesday doubleheader at Kirkwood CC.
