Another Groet Shutout, Another IHCC Split

Ottumwa -- For the second doubleheader in three days, IHCC's Alexis Groet threw a first-game shutout, but the Warriors couldn't complete the sweep.  Groet was superb with a two-hitter and 10 Ks in the 9-0 victory in game one.  Iowa Lakes broke through with four runs in the top of the 9th in the nightcap and an IHCC bid to tie or pick up the win stalled in the bottom of the inning as the Lakers triumphed, 10-9.

Groet had blanked NIACC in a 1-0 win on Thursday, striking out 15.  Her 10 Ks against Iowa Lakes gives her 101 in 77 innings pitched this spring.  She got plenty of offensive support.  The Warriors plated two runs in the 1st inning, then broke the game open with a seven-run 4th.  Macey Harrington had the big blow in the 4th, a 3-run homer.  She scored three runs.  Brooke Snider and Jaylie Reints both had two-hit games and Vanessa Bakley had a hit, a run and two RBIs.  Groet walked two in improving to 3-5 for the spring

After ILCC talllied four runs in the top of the 9th in game two, IHCC began the bottom half of the inning with a leadoff single by Snider, a two-run home run from Harrington -- her second of the game and third for the day -- and a round-tripper by Reints.  But the rally ended when the next three IHCC hitters were retired in order.  Iowa Lakes took a 5-1 lead after an inning and a half and was up 6-2 after 4 1/2.  IHCC got two runs back in the 5th, then tied the score with two in the bottom of the 7th, sending the game to extra innings.  Harrington had a single to go along with her two homers and she leads the team in long balls with eight and in RBIs with 21 after getting five in this game.  Reints' HR was her 3rd.  Snider, Alexis Westercamp and Reints all had two hits and Westercamp knocked in two runs.  Jakala Hall started for the Warriors and departed in the 4th inning.  Nina Hendriks threw five scoreless innings in relief before the Lakers broke through in the 9th.

Indian Hills has road doubleheaders at Kirkwood next Tuesday and Southwestern on Thursday.
