Ottumwa -- Indian Hills used a pair of victories over Iowa Western on Friday to take over sole possession of first place in the ICCAC standings, the Warriors winning game one, 3-1, before walloping the Reivers, 10-2 in five innings, in the nightcap. The results leave IHCC with a league mark of 8-2, a game better than Iowa Western with each team still having two games to play.
Indian Hills got solid pitching from Alexis Groet and a big two-run home run by Alexis Westercamp to claim the opening contest. Groet allowed only four hits and struck out 12 in a dominating performance similar to many she has had in the Warriors' current 16-game winning streak. Each team managed four hits, but the big one for IHCC was Westercamp's two-run shot in the 4th inning to break a 0-0 tie. Macey Harrington added a sacrifice fly in the 5th and IWCC got their only run in the 6th. The other hits for IHCC were singles by Brittni Lloyd and Brooke Snider and a double by Chloe Olson. Lloyd also stole two bases. Groet outdueled Reivers' hurler Julie Katz to bring Indian Hills into a tie for the top spot in the conference.
That tie didn't last long, however, as the Warriors grabbed first place all to themselves by pounding three home runs and dominating the second game. Brooke Snider had her 17th long ball of the spring, Harrington blasted her 22nd and Olson clubbed her 12th. After Iowa Western tallied a first-inning run, The Warriors erupted for six in the 2nd and added four more runs in the 4th to end the game in five innings. Nina Hendriks spaced seven hits to get the win in the circle. In addition to the homers, Indian Hills had doubles from Lloyd, Snider, Westercamp, Jordan Hollon and Vanessa Bakley. Snider knocked in four runs, Harrington two, and Lloyd, Olson, Hollon and Bakley one each. The trio of Snider, Bakley and Hollon scored two runs apiece.
The Warriors play their final regular-season ICCAC games on Sunday afternoon against Marshalltown.
