Centerville, IA – The No. 1 nationally ranked Indian Hills Women's Wrestling squad rolled to an impressive 53-1 victory over Trinidad State Junior College (CO) in its season opener at home. The Warriors won all 11 matches on the night.
Indian Hills earned four falls on the night as No. 5 Chasey Karabell (Aurora, CO/Eaglecrest), returning All-Americans Angelica Vicente Gonzalez (Cidra, Puerto Rico/Eugenio Guerra Cruz) and Ruth Jimenez Batista (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Trina Padilla De Sanz), along with No. 1 nationally ranked Nevaeh Hayden (Tulsa, OK/Union) scored five team points apiece for the Warriors.
Indian Hills, ranked No. 1 in the preseason national rankings announced on Monday, has now defeated Trinidad State in back-to-back regular season duals. The victory was the first for first-year Indian Hills head women's coach Darren Wynn.
Tuesday night's season opener kicked off with Karabell, ranked No. 5 in the nation preseason 103lb weight class. Karabell built a quick lead before scoring her first collegiate fall in 2:07.
Freshman Alycia Perez (Glen Ellyn, IL/Glenbard West) followed up with a 12-2 tech fall in her collegiate debut before freshman Ariah Mervilus (Virginia Beach, VA/Landstown) pushed the lead to 13-1 after scoring an 11-0 tech fall in the first period.
Vicente Gonzalez, a returning All-American, needed just 35 seconds of mat time to secure her first pin of the year in the 124 weight class. Following a forfeit at 131lbs, sophomore All-American Amaria Ridgner (Richton Park, IL/Rich Township) scored a fall in 1:20 to extend the lead to 28-1.
Batista, an All-American for the Warriors last season, earned a fall in 37 seconds at 145lbs. Hayden made a splash in her collegiate debut at 180lbs as the preseason No. 1 ranked wrestler in the nation earned a fall in 30 seconds for the Warriors.
The 53 team points are the second-most in school history as the Warriors have now scored at lest 50 team points in a dual four times over the past two seasons. Indian Hills is now 4-0 in the team's last four season-opening duals, outscoring their opponents 162-38 along the way.
