Derek Wilson has returned to the place where he began his collegiate running career after being named the assistant coach for the Indian Hills running programs.
Wilson will coach the IHCC cross country and track and field teams along with head coach Brent Ewing.
He comes to Indian Hills after a stint as an assistant track and field coach at Highland Community College in Kansas. Among his duties there were training the 5K and 10K runners during the outdoor track season and recruiting.
Prior to Highland CC Wilson coached at Missouri Valley College during last fall's cross country season. He was also involved in recruiting at MVC.
Wilson earned his bachelor's degree in Sport Management at Missouri Valley where he was an All-American in cross country in 2017 and a two-time all-conference cross country runner, finishing second in the conference meet as a senior. On the track, Wilson qualifed for the NAIA national meet in the 10K and the half-marathon, won the conference 5K and 10K his senior season, ran on a distance medley relay team that took first in the conference in 2017 and '18 and was named to the HACC all-conference team six times indoors and three time outdoors. He was also on the academic dean's list all four semesters he was at Missouri Valley.
While at Indian Hills, the new assistant coach captained the cross country team in his freshman and sophomore seasons, was on the ICCAC all-conference team twice, and was an Academic All-American in 2014. He was both an indoor DMR and outdoor steeplechase national qualifier in 2016.
