Matthew Torrez was named the ninth head coach of the historic Indian Hills Baseball program in June 2018. In five seasons at the helm of the program, including the shortened COVID-19 2022 campaign, Torrez has led the Warriors to 144 victories and a .613 winning percentage to go along with two region championships and a JUCO World Series appearance.

The 2023 campaign saw the Warriors capture its second NJCAA Region 11 Championship in three seasons under Torrez. The Warriors swept all three games of the postseason tournament to advance to the NJCAA Midwest District Tournament where the team placed third overall. Indian Hills placed 10 on the NJCAA All-Region 11 team and saw sophomore Daniel Figueroa earn the prestigious NATYCAA Male Scholar Athlete of the Year Award. Indian Hills was also recognized as a NJCAA Academic Team of the year for the 16th consecutive campaign with a program-best 18 individuals named to the NJCAA All-Academic team for maintaining a GPA of 3.60 or better throughout the year.

Under the guidance of Torrez, the Warriors have earned 32 NJCAA All-Region XI selections in four full seasons. The program also claimed back-to-back NJCAA Region XI Defensive Player of the Year awards in catchers Dave Janssen (2021) and Diego Aragaon (2022). Along with the 2023 region title, Torrez led the Warriors to the 2021 NJCAA Region XI Championship, the 2021 NJCAA Midwest District Championship, and the program's 12th all-time appearance at the JUCO World Series in 2021.

The 2022 season saw the Warriors capture 37 victories, including a 24-9 mark in the ultra-competitive ICCAC league. Torrez guided the Warriors to a 21-7 mark at historic Pat Daugherty Field while making a run to the NJCAA Region XI Championship game where the team finished as runners-up. The Warriors earned four NJCAA All-Region XI First-Team selections and three NJCAA All-Region XI Second-Team selections. The pitching staff racked up 440 strikeouts along the way, the second-most in program history.

Academically, the Warriors finished as one of the top teams in the nation once again in 2022. The Warriors were named an NJCAA Academic Team of the Year for the 15th consecutive seasons while 12 individuals earned NJCAA All-Academic honors for maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.6 or better throughout the year. The team earned 63 ICCAC All-Academic honors between the fall and spring semester.

Torrez guided the Warriors to a thrilling run to the 2021 JUCO World Series that saw upsets of nationally ranked Iowa Western to win the NJCAA Region XI title and No. 1 nationally ranked Wabash Valley to claim the NJCAA Midwest District Championship. Making the program's 12th all-time appearance in Grand Junction, Indian Hills knocked off top-seed Crowder in the opening round before falling to eventual national champion McLennan and Crowder in the double-elimination tournament. Indian Hills capped the year with a 44-16 record, the team's most wins since 2006.

Under the direction of Torrez, the Warriors placed five players on the NJCAA All-Region XI First-Team and seven more individuals on the NJCAA All-Region XI Second-Team. Academically, the Warriors were once again named the NJCAA Academic Team of the Year for posting a 3.49 team GPA while 20 individuals were named to the NJCAA All-Academic team, including four who earned first-team status for obtaining a 4.0 GPA throughout the year.

In his first season as head coach at Indian Hills, Torrez led the Falcons to a 10-6 record in the tough Iowa Community College Athletic Conference and a 25-26 overall record. Indian Hills won 3-of-4 games in an early season trip to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, staged one of the biggest comebacks in recent history by erasing a 10-1 deficit to beat DMACC, 14-13, and defeated league champ Iowa Western twice.  The Falcons placed seven players on the all-region teams and did an outstanding job academically with 28 players earning academic all-region honors.  The squad had a cumulative grade point average of 3.43 which qualified it as an all-academic team by the NJCAA with a GPA that tied for eighth-best in the nation among two-year baseball programs.

Torrez took over at Indian Hills in June 2018 after six very successful seasons at Trinidad State Junior College in Colorado.  His final Trinidad State team went 47-12, was 30-6 in the Empire Conference, and won its 5th consecutive Region IX postseason tournament championship.  Following the season, Torrez was named the Region IX Coach of the Year for the 5th year in a row.

Trinidad State was 222-126 in six seasons with Torrez at the helm -- a winning percentage of .638 -- and won two conference titles in addition to the five region championships.  Twice they won over 40 games and improved from finishing two games above .500 his first season to 35 games over .500 his last season.

His Trinidad State teams turned in solid performances in the classroom as well as on the field.  They had an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher every year he was the head coach at the Colorado school.

The IHCC head coach has 19 years experience as a college coach.  He arrived at Trinidad State after spending five years as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at New Mexico Junior College. His previous college coaching stops include Barton County (Kansas), Clarendon (Texas), Darton College (Georgia) and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, where he obtained his bachelor's of science degree in sports management.

A native of Brush, Colorado, Torrez played college baseball at Colby (Kansas) CC and Metro State (Colorado).  He earned a master's degree in sports administration from East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma.  He and his wife, Patti, have two children, Austin and Krista.
