Doig, Warriors Open With Wins

Doig

Bullard, Texas -- It was a successful start to the spring season for the Indian Hills Warriors, who rolled to an easy win in the Tyler JC Spring Invitational.  And, it was an especially good start for IHCC freshmen Harry Doig and Jesse MacNaughtan, who turned in outstanding efforts in finishing one-two in the individual standings.

The Warriors ended the two-day, 36-hole event 26 strokes in front of runnerup Murray State CC and 33 ahead of host Tyler JC.  Doig, on the strength of rounds of 66 and 72, took individual medalist honors, defeating teammate MacNaughtan by six shots.

"I'm really happy for Harry as he worked so hard during the winter" said IHCC coach John Mulholland.  "He went eagle, birdie in the first two holes to really kick-start his day in round one and he got off to a similar start in round two with birdies on his first two holes.  He was a pleasure to watch.......his first of many wins I would imagine."

Doig was the only player in the field to break par in the first round and posted the lowest score of his college career and the lowest in relation to par (six-under) he has shot in a competitive round.  Mulholland said the 66 for Doig was a course record for the Oak Hurst Golf Club.  He then backed up his record round with an even-par 72.

MacNaughtan's 69 in the second round was highlighted by a slam dunk from the fairway on the par-5 sixth hole.

Indian Hills had the low round each day -- a 293 and a 290.

George Clarke tied for 5th place with rounds of 77 and 73; Maxime Leclerc ended up in 7th place; Ethan Keane tied for 10th; and Joe Hodgson tied for 29th.

"For not playing golf outside for at least a month our performance was pleasing," Mulholland said, "but we know we can perform at a higher standard.  With some good practice in Dallas over the next four days we will get back in the groove."

The Warriors are slated to take part in the Midland College/Green Tree Invitational next week.
