IHCC Puts Six on All-Region Squad; Plona is Coach of the Year

All region

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills has the Player of the Year, the Coach of the Year and six players on the All-Region teams in selections announced by the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference this week.

Senior guard Chris Childs was tabbed as the region's top player and his coach, Hank Plona, got the coaching award for leading the Warriors to the regular-season and postseason conference titles.

Childs was joined on the All-Region first team by teammates Tyon Grant-Foster and Chris PaytonDrake Jeffries was a second-team choice and Maurice Calloo and Malique Jacobs earned honorable mention honors.  Payton is the only freshman in the group.

Childs is averaging 14.4 points a game for the Warriors.  He has already set the school single-season record with 105 3-pointers while shooting 45.5 percent from behind the arc.  The native of the Bronx, N.Y., is making nearly 90 percent of his free throw attempts and also averages 2.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.

Grant-Foster, from Kansas City, Kans., leads IHCC with his average of 16.0 points.  He is also the leading rebounder, pulling down 6.6 boards per game, and is shooting 47.4 percent.  He has almost doubled his freshman average of 8.2 points.  Grant-Foster signed to continue his career at Kansas after he finishes his second season at Indian Hills.

Payton has put together a strong second-half performance that earned him the region recognition.  From Bloomington, Ill., the 6-6 freshman has increased his scoring average to 11.6 and his rebound number to 5.6 per contest and is the team leader in field goal percentage at 68.8.  Payton has scored almost 15.5 points a game over the last 14 contests.

Jeffries, a transfer from Minot State (ND) and a redshirt sophomore, has been a great complement to Childs in the 3-point category, hitting 84 while averaging 9.8 points.  He has made 45.2 percent of his shots from distance and 86.4 percent from the foul line while playing in every game this season.

Calloo, the only other Warrior to play in all 32 games, is a transfer from Oklahoma State and has contributed 9.2 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.  The sophomore from Windsor, Ontario is making nearly 46 percent of his field goal attempts and almost 80 percent of his free throws.

Jacobs, who came to IHCC after a year at Hutchinson CC, is the team leader in assists with 128, 4.3 a game, and steals with 41.  His scoring average of 8.3 points reflects the fact he has averaged over 13 points in the last seven games, all of which he has scored in double figures.  He has shot 55.4 percent from the floor.

Plona is in his 5th year as the IHCC head coach and is trying to guide the Warriors to their 5th straight national tournament trip since he took over the program and their 7th straight overall.  Plona's IHCC teams have compiled a sparkling record of 147-21 and have gone 45-5 against conference opponents while winning five straight regular-season and four postseason league championships.

This year's Warriors squad is 29-3 heading into Thursday's district title game against Dawson (Mont.) CC.  The winner gets an automatic berth in the NJCAA national tourney.
