On to Postseason After Warriors Split With Kirkwood

Cedar Rapids, Iowa -- A game-winning home run by Keagan Helson in game two against Kirkwood CC on Tuesday will, hopefully, supply some momentum for the Indian Hills Warriors as they head into this weekend's Region XI postseason tournament. Helson's blast to center field with one out in the top of the 7th inning was the difference in IHCC's 3-2 win after Kirkwood eked out a 5-4 win in the opener.

Indian Hills grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning of game two on a pair of RBI hits, the second by Helson. Kirkwood jumped on top with a 4-run 5th that featured a two-run single and two-run double. Back came the Warriors to knot the score with two runs in the 6th. Taylor Takushi drove in one of them with a single. Marissa Promes took over for starter Abby Straight and got the win in relief.

Game one saw the Warriors' attempt at a last-inning rally come up just short. They scored once on a run-scoring single by Lexi Smith, knocking in Takushi, but a groundout ended the threat and the game. Helson singled and scored the first run in the 5th, but the Warriors left the bases loaded that inning. Kirkwood pushed across two runs in the 1st and answered IHCC's run in the 5th with one of their own in the bottom of the inning, and that proved to be the margin of victory.

Indian Hills takes a 26-13 record into the weekend Region XI tourney. The number-one seed will open with Marshalltown CC at 10 a.m. on Friday in Council Bluffs. The Warriors, winners of three consecutive regular-season region titles and the last two postseason crowns as well, swept all four games from Marshalltown during the regular season.
