Home Run Record Belongs to Harrington, Warriors Sweep

Harrington

Ottumwa -- On a day when freshman Macey Harrington broke the single-season home run record, Indian Hills ran its winning streak to 10 and got two more shutout victories, blanking Southwestern 10-0 and 4-0 at Hellyer Field.

Harrington's 20th homer of the season came in the second inning of the opener, one of four long balls in the game for IHCC.  Her smash was No. 20, eclipling the previous record of 19 held jointly by Breon Michel and Kacey Duffield.  The Warriors have 12 more regular-season contests, plus the postseason, for Harrington to add to her total.

Jordan Hollon got the offense going in the opener with a solo home run.  After Harrington went deep the following inning, Abby Sweet hit one out in the 3rd and Jaylie Reints slugged another homer in the 4th to close out the scoring.  Meanwhile, Alexis Groet had another sparkling performance for IHCC, pitching her 6th shutout of the spring with 10 strikeouts.

Game two was a pitcher's battle with neither team able to score through 5 1/2 innings.  The Warriors' Brittni Lloyd tripled leading off the bottom of the 6th and came home on a single by Vanessa Bakley to snap the scoreless tie.  Indian Hills added some cushion with three more runs, two of them on a two-out single by Alexis WestercampNina Hendriks continued her strong late-season pitching for the Warriors, tossing her third shutout.

The 10-game winning streak brings the IHCC record to 27-16.  They are 18-2 over their last 20 games.

"Wednesday was a great day to be at the ballpark," said Indian Hills coach Lindsay Diehl.  "In game one we took turns hitting the long ball, then, when the wind changed in the second game and held the ball in the park, Brittni got us going in the 6th with her triple.  Both of our pitchers threw really well.  Getting in a tight game and having to produce runs late was good for us.  I was happy with how we played and the girls are having fun playing Warrior softball right now."

Indian Hills goes to Indianola on Friday for a pair of games against the Simpson College JV.
