Eight Players on Women's All-Region Soccer; Longo, Murphy Get Special Honors

All-Region

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills placed eight players on the 2019 All-Region women's soccer teams.  In addition, coach Anthony Longo was named the Coach of the Year and Emily Murphy was recognized as the Player of the Year.

The Warriors selected to the all-region first team were sophomores Murphy, Kiri Chiba and Julie Gouilliart.  Soph Miranda Kurtt and freshmen Madison L. Meyer and Yui Okamoto were second-team picks.  A pair of freshmen, Elani Mears and Sierra Dimmel, earned honorable mention recognition.

Murphy, Kurtt and Gouilliart are repeat selections as they were also all-region performers as freshmen.  Murphy was named to the first team last year, Kurtt the second team and Gouilliart was an honorable mention pick in 2018.  Meyer, Okamoto, Mears and Dimmel are part of a talented freshman class at IHCC.

Coach Longo has lifted the IHCC program to new heights in his four years at the helm.  His career record is 56-12-5.  "It is an honor to receive the Coach of the Year Award," Longo said.  "The ICCAC is full of outstanding coaches who are great at what they do.  Any one of the nine coaches would have been a great choice for the award.  To be selected by them at the end of the year is flattering."

Longo described each of his all-region players.

Emily Murphy - Emily finished the season with 34 goals and eight assists, giving her 71 goals and 23 assists for her career.  She led the ICCAC in goals in each of the last two years and is one of the best players to play in the program.  Emily was the catalyst for all the success we had this season and was a great student-athlete both on and off the field.

Kiri Chiba - Kiri is one of the most gifted players I've ever coached.  Her technical ability on the ball and work ethic made our offense one of the best this past season.

Julie Gouilliart - Julie was able to control the midfield and provided assists on the majority of our goals.

Miranda Kurtt - Miranda is a very good forward who contributed massively offensively.  A lot of things she does well will never show up on the stats sheet, but she was an integral part of our team.

Madison L. Meyer - Madison is a great forward who came is as a freshman and secured her spot in the starting 11.  She was able to score big goals in timely moments all season.  She will be a player to build around for the 2020 season.

Yui Okamoto - Yui is a very talented outside back who was able to contribute regularly to the offense.  We were able to count on her being strong offensively and defensively.

Elani Mears - Elani  is one of the best goalies to play in the program.  She is extremely talented and confident in her abilities.  Elani was able to make timely saves and keep us in close games when we needed her to.

Sierra Dimmel - Sierra is a very strong outside back.  We were able to put her on the opposing team's best player and she would shut them down.

"Overall, it was a very successful season," according to the IHCC coach.  "We had a lot of accomplisments this season: starting the year on a 12-game unbeaten streak, having the fewest losses in program history, getting the second player ever from the program to be selected as ICCAC Player of the Year, finishing second overall in the conference, playing in the conference postseason finals for the third time in the past four years.  Even though we fell short of our goal to get to the national tournament there was a lot to be proud of and this will go down as one of the best women's soccer teams ever to play at Indian Hills."
