Mike Hagen guided the Indian Hills Men's Golf program as its head coach through the most decorated period in team history from 2005-15. Hagen will officially be inducted into the Indian Hills Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday, Jan. 22 at halftime of the men's basketball game at the Hellyer Center in Ottumwa.

Hagen arrived on the Ottumwa campus in 2005 and made an immediate impact, guiding the Warriors to a berth at the NJCAA National Championship each season. In just his second season at the helm, Hagen coached Brad Smith to the individual national title at the 2006 NJCAA National Championship in Hobbs, NM with a four-round total of 271, tied for the lowest mark in tournament history. Smith also set a record for the lowest single round in tournament history that same year with a 62.

The 2006 team boasts two of the top-11 lowest rounds of all-time in national championship play. The Warriors posted an opening round 273, tied for the current 11th best mark all-time before firing a second round 264, the current second-best mark all-time. The 2006 team's 44-under 1,108 is the fifth-lowest four-round total in national championship history.

Under Hagen, the Warriors continued to ascend as the premier northern golf program in the NJCAA. In 2011, the Warriors became the first-ever northern program to win the NJCAA DI National Championship in Odessa, TX with a 14-over 1,166. The Warriors followed up in 2012 to become just the sixth program to repeat as national champions, winning by 13 strokes in Newton, KS.

After a one-year hiatus from hoisting the trophy, the Warriors returned to glory with back-to-back national championships in 2014 and 2015 to become just the second program all-time to have two separate stints as back-to-back national champions.

Along with the four national titles, Hagen collected eight district championships, 62 tournament victories, including three at the NCAA Division I level, four NJCAA Coach of the Year honors, and three Dave Williams National Coach of the Year honors. 19 individuals were named NJCAA All-Americans and 12 Warriors earned Ping All-American status. Five freshmen were named to the Ping All-Freshman team and two individuals earned the prestigious Phil Mickelson Award – Steven Ihm (2011) and Ben Ludlam (2012).

For his efforts at Indian Hills, Hagen was selected to the NJCAA Coaches Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Hall of Fame in 2019.

Along with Hagen's duties as head golf coach, the Davenport, IA native served as the Indian Hills Athletic Director for six years.

Hagen departed Indian Hills in 2015 to take over at Arkansas State University where he has guided the Red Wolves program for the past seven seasons. Hagen has led the team to two NCAA Tournament appearances (2019, 2021) and was named the 2015-16 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year. The Red Wolves have claimed 19 tournament championships while 16 individuals have earned All-Sun Belt Conference honors.

Former Indian Hills Men's Golfer Brad Smith on Hagen
