MCHENRY BEATS THE BUZZER IN SEASON OPENER

Ottumwa, IA – Don McHenry's (Milwaukee, WI/Hawaii-Hilo) overtime buzzer-beater lifted No. 3 Indian Hills Men's Basketball to a thrilling 88-87 overtime victory over Dodge City Community College at the Hellyer Center on Tuesday night.

In the season opener vs. the Conquistadors, McHenry drained a 30-foot shot to beat the buzzer and give Indian Hills its first victory of the season. The win extends the Warriors' home-opener winning streak to 36 consecutive years, all coming at the Hellyer Center. Head coach Hank Plona improves to 8-0 all-time in home openers during his tenure at Indian Hills.

In a back-and-forth marathon that pitted two national tournament teams from a year ago, the Warriors and Conquistadors found themselves deadlocked at 75 at the end of regulation. Dodge City, ranked No. 5 to end last year's national poll, built a six-point advantage with just over a minute to play in the extra session before the Warriors rallied to set the stage for McHenry's heroics.

A three-point play from Kiran Oliver (Chicago, IL/New Mexico State) pulled the Warriors within one, but a free throw from the Conquistadors with less than four seconds to play put the visitors ahead 87-85. On the ensuing inbound, sophomore Enoch Kalambay (Gatineau, Canada/Orangeville Prep) dashed up the far sideline and fired a cross-court pass to McHenry. The first-year sophomore found space and connected on the long-range shot as the clocked expired.

McHenry led the Warriors with 20 points off the bench in the win. The sophomore went 7-13 from the floor. Kalambay added 18 points to go along with a team-high nine rebounds. Eddiean Tirado (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Miami Triple Threat) connected on three three-point shots to finish with 16 points while Oliver contributed 14 points on 6-8 shooting.

Truth Harris (Mount Vernon, NY/Pensacola) came off the bench to fill the stat sheet with eight points, five assists, three steals, and a block. Lado Laku (Dallas, TX/Cal State Fullerton) added eight rebounds and blocked a team-high four shots in his debut with the Warriors.

As a team, the Warriors outrebounded the Conguistadors 41-39. Indian Hills held the opposition to just 29.4 percent from three-point range and forced 19 turnovers in the win. Indian Hills used a 55-20 bench points advantage as 10 different individuals scored for the Warriors.

In a game that saw 10 ties and 12 lead changes, the Warriors saw Dodge City take initial control of the game after the Conquistadors built an 11-7 lead early on. Indian Hills took its first lead at the 11:43 mark as McHenry converted a three-point play for a 16-14 lead. Tirado buried a three-point shot, his first of the night at the 10:34 mark to give the Warriors its largest lead of the night at 19-14.

Dodge City responded with an 11-2 run of its own before Tirado slowed the attack with another three-point shot with under seven to play in the opening half. Neither side led by more than three the rest of the half as Indian Hills took a 35-34 lead into the locker room.

Indian Hills saw its lead push to five once again, but it was another response from Dodge City that saw the visitors retake the lead with its own six-point edge with under nine to play in regulation. Indian Hills erased a six-point deficit with under two minutes remaining thanks in large part to Kalamabay's game-tying three-point play to knot the score at 75 and eventually force the extra session.

McHenry's game-winning three-point shot brought Warrior fans back to 2017 when former Warrior Devontae Lane hit a buzzer-beater in the season-opener to knock off Johnson County. The win kept the Warriors season-opening home win streak alive and sparked 33 consecutive victories in an undefeated regular season for Indian Hills.

The Warriors return to action this weekend with the RV & Power Sport Classic at the Hellyer Center. The four-team, two-day event gets underway Friday afternoon at 4:30 PM as the Warriors take on Cloud County Community College on Friday and Independence Community College on Saturday.
