The fourth edition of the Iowa-Missouri Challenge comes to Ottumwa as Indian Hills plays host to the two-day, eight-game tournament at the Hellyer Center

OPENING TIP

Indian Hills will welcome seven teams to the Hellyer Center as the Warriors host the Iowa-Missouri Challenge for the first-time in the four-year history of the event.

  • Indian Hills is coming off a 109-100 season-opening victory on the road vs. McCook on Tuesday night.
  • The Warriors were led by Kheni Briggs' game-high 27 points while David Hermes chipped in 16 and Trevion LaBeaux added 15.
  • With the win over the Indians, head coach Josh Sash collected his first win at the helm of the Warriors.
  • Indian Hills enters the weekend with a 6-0 record all-time at the Iowa-Missouri Challenge, including an 86-66 win over Three Rivers and an 81-59 win over State Fair last year.
  • This year's Iowa-Missouri Challenge features three teams in the national rankings - #12 Southeastern, #14 Indian Hills, and #20 Moberly Area.

SCOUTING THE GRIZZLIES

Missouri State - West Plains heads to Ottumwa with a 2-1 overall record.

  • The Grizzlies opened the year with a 76-55 win over Link Year Prep before splitting a pair of games in Enid, OK - a 72-57 loss to No. 7 Midland (TX) and a 64-61 win over New Mexico Military.
  • Through three games, Kyle Germany is leading the Grizzlies with 12.0 PPG on 50.0 percent shooting from three-point range.
  • Kendon Peebles enters the weekend averaging 11.0 PPG, including 19 points against New Mexico Military.
  • Indian Hills owns a 24-5 all-time record against the Grizzlies, including a 9-1 mark over the team's last 10 matchups.
  • The two sides split last year's season series with West Plains upending the Warriors 76-75 on February 6 in Missouri and Indian Hills earning a 79-60 win in Ottumwa on November 19.

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS

A familiar foe, Moberly Area heads to the Hellyer Center as the lone Missouri team in the tournament ranked in the NJCAA national polls.

  • The Greyounds opened the year with a 104-100 loss to Link Year Prep before knocking off No. 13 nationally ranked Butler (KS)
  • Xavier Sykes leads the way with 24.0 PPG to open the season while Tekao Carpenter dropped 29 points in the win over Butler.
  • Indian Hills and Moberly have squared off 80 times between the two perennial junior college powerhouse programs separted by just 125 miles.
  • The Warriors own a 43-37 advantage in the all-time series as the two programs have combined for 49 national tournament appearances and seven national championships.
  • The Greyhounds squeezed out an 82-71 win over the Warriors in the last meeting, a top-20 matchup on January 3.

SCOUTING THE FIELD

  • Marshalltown will make the trek to Ottumwa with an 0-1 record after dropping a narrow 69-65 decision to Highland (IL) on November 4.
  • Southeastern enters the weekend as the highest nationally ranked team in the field and are off to a 3-0 start on the year with wins over Carl Sandubrg (IL), Malcolm X (IL), and Harry S. Truman (IL).
  • Triton rounds out the Iowa/Illinois field and will bring a 3-0 record to the Hellyer Center, outscoring its opponents by 14.3 PPG.
  • State Fair is off to a 2-1 start on the year, dropping its most recent contest to CLoud County (KS) 75-41.
  • Three Rivers has won two games in a row after dropping its season opener. The Raiders knocked off defending national champions John A. Logan on November 4 91-74.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Warriors will hit the road for a lengthy southern swing that includes three games in a five-day span. Indian Hills will take on No. 1 nationally ranked Northwest Florida State College in a re-match of last year's national semifinal on Noevember 14 in Niceville, FL. The Warriors will also take on Coastal Alabama - North in Monroeville, AL on November 15 and travel to No. 6 nationally ranked Vincennes University (IN) in Vincennes, IN on November 18.
