OPENING TIP

One of the longest-standing rivalries in all of college athletics, Saturday night's contest marks the 151st edition of the historic Indian Hills-Southeastern series that dates back to the 1963-64 season.

The Blackhawks enter Saturday's affair having won the last contest in the series, but the Warriors have captured nine of the last 11 matchups.

STARTING FIVE

  • Saturday marks the second-straight league matchup for the Warriors, the first team in the ICCAC to play two confernece contests this season.
  • Indian Hills enters Saturday night's matchup as the highest scoring team in the ICCAC with a 79.4 mark.
  • Indian Hills and Southeastern are both coming off trips to last year's NJCAA National Tournament, the first time the two teams have appeared in Hutchinson, KS together.
  • Saturday's opponent will be the Warriors' 11th different matchup against a team that has appeared in the NJCAA national rankings at one point throughout the 2023-24 season.
  • Head coach Josh Sash is 6-0 all-time against Southeastern - 5-0 as an assistant at Indian Hills from 2015-17 and 1-0 as head coach of DMACC in 2019-20.

LAST TIME OUT

After seeing its six-game winning streak snapped, the Warriors bounced back in a big way Wednesday night with the team's first ICCAC win of the year, an 82-52 win at Marshalltown Community College.

Trevion LaBeaux powered the Warriors with a career-high 30 points while pulling down nine boards as the Warriors ran away with the conference's 2024 opener.

SERIES HISTORY

A highlighted date on every major junior college basketball pundits calendar each year, the Warriors and Blackhawks have put together action-packed contests throughout the last seven decades. Southeastern owns a 76-68 all-time series advantage, but Indian Hills has held the upper-hand over the last three decades with a 62-41 record since the 1989-90 season.

  • Over the previous 131 matchups that span through the 1971-72 season, the two programs are separated by just 13 points, 9,855-9,842 in favor of Indian Hills.
  • The two sides have played in 26 games decided by three points or less, with each program winning 13 of those contests. Indian Hills owns a 5-3 record in games decided by one point.
  • The Warriors are 21-43 all-time in Burlington, but have won three in a row and seven of the last 10 at Loren Walker Arena, including a thrilling 59-56 win on the road last season.

  • January 14, 2023 - Indian Hills 59, Southeastern 56
    • In the eighth-lowest scoring matchup in series history, the Warriors stormed back from a 12-point deficit to defeat the Blackhawks at the Loren Walker Arena.
  • February 5, 2022 - Indian Hills 67, Southeastern 66
    • Braxton Bayless cemented his name in the record books in this historic rivalry as the sophomore banked home a 35-foot runner at the buzzer to give the Warriors the one-point victory. Sophomore J'Vonne Hadley, who provided the game-winning assist, added a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
  • January 16, 2016 – Indian Hills 104, Southeastern 61
    • Indian Hills used a barrage of three-pointers, 15 in total, to rout Southeastern 104-61 in West Burlington. The win was the largest margin of victory for Indian Hills in the all-time series. Dazhonetae Bennett led the Warriors with a season-best 20 points in the win.
  • March 7, 2009 – Southeastern 81, Indian Hills 80
    • With 56 combined wins entering the contest, Indian Hills and Southeastern squared off in the NJCAA Region XI Championship in Ottumwa. Indian Hills Athletics Hall of Fame member Dwight Buycks poured in a game-high 32 points, including a pair of free throws to give the Warriors an 80-79 lead with 37 seconds to play. Southeastern responded with the eventual game winner from Brian McMikle with seven seconds to go to lift the Blackhawks to the 2009 NJCAA Region XI title.
  • February 26, 1998 – Indian Hills 72, Southeastern 71
    • With an undefeated record and a shot at a second consecutive national championship on the line, the Warriors survived a scare from the Blackhawks in the opening round of the State Tournament. Led by NJCAA Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Pete Mickeal's 23 points, the Warriors knocked off Southeastern 72-71 and went on to win its second of three straight NJCAA National Championships.
  • February 28, 1964 - Southeastern 96, Indian Hills 69
    • The first-ever contest between the two programs came in the NJCAA Region 11 Junior College Basketball tournament in Webster City, IA where No. 3 nationally ranked Burlington Community College knocked off Jim Tanner's Centerville Community College Falcons.

SCOUTING THE BLACKHAWKS

Southeastern enters Saturday night's matchup with a 13-5 overall record, having won three straight games by an average of 21.7 points per game.

  • The Blackhawks, who entered the year ranked No. 12 in the preseason NJCAA rankings, are currently in the 'Others Receiving Votes' category.
  • Southeastern is outscoring its opponents 76.3-64.0 points per game on the year, winning six games by at least 20 points.
  • Raphael Gay, a transfer from Clarendon College (TX), leads the Blackhawks with 15.5 points per game on th year, scoring in double-figures in all but three contests this year. The sophomore also leads the team with 7.6 rebounds/game.
  • Jacob Franklin (11.6) and Inslee Carroll (10.0) join Gay in double-figures.
  • The Blackhawks rank third in the nation with 33.1 defensive rebounds/game and eighth overall with 46.0 total rebounds/game.
