Ottumwa, IA – For the first time in program history, the Indian Hills Men's Soccer team is set to host the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DI Men's Soccer Midwest District Tournament. Action gets underway Friday afternoon in Ottumwa.

Winners of the NJCAA Region 11 Regular Season series, Indian Hills earned the right to host the four-team, two-day NJCAA DI Men's Soccer District Tournament for the first time in program history.

FISRT WHISTLE

Indian Hills (7-2-4, 2-0-0) will take the pitch for a regular season match for the first time in nearly three weeks. The Warriors finished the regular season ranked No. 9 in the NJCAA national rankings.

  • The Warriors finished the regular season with just one loss over the team's final eight contests, pitching three shutouts along the way.
  • The Warriors' 1.01 goals against average currently ranks 19th in the nation.
  • Sophomore Gustavo Marques leads the offense with a team-high 14 points and five goals while Lucas Bauer and Alex Rodriguez have each tallied 12 points on the year.
  • Freshman Harvey Sellers owns a 0.71 goals against average for the Warriors to go along with a 3-1-4 record.
  • Indian Hills will be looking for its first trip to the national tournament since 2017, the program's only appearance at the national tournament in program history.

VU'S NOTES

In his first season at the helm of the Indian Hills Men's Soccer, Felix Vu has led the Warriors to the program's second consecutive District tournament appearance.

"We are excited to begin the postseason this Friday, and further excited to be able to do it at home," Vu stated. "All the teams coming in have proven to be one of the best teams in their region and the country, so it will be a great weekend of quality soccer in Ottumwa."

SCOUTING THE FALCONS

Harry S. Truman (7-2-3) enters the weekend as the NJCAA Region 4 (upper Illinois) champion.

  • The Falcons opened the season with five consecutive wins before closing out the regular season 2-1-3.
  • Harry S. Truman has pitched six shutouts on the year and has not conceded a goal in the team's last three outings.
  • Anthony Athanassopoulos paces the offense with a team-high 18 points for the Falcons, scoring five goals with eight assists.
  • Five different players have tallied double-digit points this year with Pedro Storani leading the team with six goals.
  • Marco Scassa has been the primary netminder for the Falcons, starting seven matches with four wins and a 0.83 goals against average.
  • Friday's matchup will be the first all-time meeting between Indian Hills and Harry S. Truman.
  • Harry S. Truman will be looking for their first-ever national tournament appearance.

SCOUTING THE REIVERS

The NJCAA Region 11 runner-up, Iowa Western (6-3-3) enters the tournament ranked No. 12 in the nation.

  • The Reivers closed out the regular season with a 4-0 win over Kansas City Kansas, but are just 1-1-2 over the team's last four outings.
  • Iowa Western and Lincoln Trail will match up for the first-time in series history, dating back to the 2021 season.
  • Will Devine and Javier Zaragoza have each started six matches this year, with both keepers holding a goals against average of 1.00 or better on the year.
  • Sophomore Timothy Mason leads the offense with five goals and 11 points on the year
  • The two-time national champions, Iowa Western has appeared in two of the last three NJCAA National Championship matches, winning the 2021 title under current head coach Mike Brown.

SCOUTING THE STATESMEN

Lincoln Trail (10-3-3) scored a thrilling 2-0 victory over No. 15 Lewis & Clark to secure the NJCAA Region 24 (lower Illinois) championship and advance to

  • Lincoln Trail will be playing in its first-ever NJCAA DI Men's Soccer Midwest District Tournament.
  • The Statesmen opened the year with three straight wins before closing out the regular season 3-0-1 over its last four contests.
  • Lincoln Trail ranks 12th in the nation with a 0.81 goals against average.
  • Freshman Ryosuke Miyata leads the Statesmen with 24 points on the year (10g, 4a) while Guilherme Melchiori has tallied 21 points (9g, 3a).
  • Gonzalo Onrubia has collected seven wins in net to go along with a 0.60 goals against average, the sixth-best mark in the nation.

WHAT'S NEXT

The winner of the District tournament will receive an automatic bid to the upcoming NJCAA DI Men's Soccer National Tournament November 12-18 at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, KS. Eight District champions will advance to the NJCAA National Tournament with four at-large selections up for grabs.
