WAUKEE, IA - This past weekend the Indian Hills Sports Shooting team had their first competition of the spring season at the SCTP Regional hosted by Simpson College at the New Pioneer Gun Club in Waukee. Teams competing included both four-year (Coe, Concordia-Nebraska, Grand View, Simpson, Upper Iowa, Wartburg), and two-year schools (Hawkeye, IHCC, Iowa Central, Iowa Western, Southeastern). Scoring was based off of the High Overall or HOA system meaning scores from each discipline – trap, skeet, sporting clays, & super sporting, all counted towards the team score. IHCC's highlight of the weekend was seeing the skeet squad place fourth overall with a team score of 437.
The team will head for Marengo, Ohio this week for the SCTP's Collegiate Nationals at the Cardinal Shooting Center which starts on Thursday, March 18 and runs through Sunday, March 21. Similar to this past weekend's competition, it will also be a HOA shoot with scores from trap, skeet, and sporting clays all counting towards the overall team score. The team placed second overall in Division IV a season ago, and Indian Hills Head Coach Jake Stalzer is hoping his squad will have similar success this week.
Along with the HOA events, the team will also test the waters in a few side events that will be offered in Ohio, including international skeet, olympic bunker trap, and 5-stand.
"Our team has very little experience with those three disciplines," Stalzer admitted. "However, I think it will be a great experience for them."
