Neosho, MO – The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DI Softball Midwest District Tournament gets underway Saturday afternoon as Indian Hills and Crowder College (MO) are set to square off in Neosho, MO.

Respective region winners Indian Hills (43-7) and Crowder (44-14) will match up in the NJCAA DI Softball Midwest District Tournament for the second consecutive season.

LEADING OFF

  • Indian Hills, winner's of the NJCAA Region 11 Tournament after sweeping the four-team bracket, heads to Neosho with a 19-game winning streak.
  • The Warriors are 18-2 in true road games this year and have not lost on the road since March 20.
  • Indian Hills has won 20 NJCAA District Championships since 1989 and have earned 20 trips to the NJCAA National Tournament.
  • The Warriors last defeated Crowder in the 2019 NJCAA District J Championship to advance to the national tournament.
  • Crowder took both games in the 2022 NJCAA Midwest District Championship in Ottumwa.

WARRIORS TO WATCH

The Warriors will enter its eighth consecutive District tournament with 12 All-Region 11 selections following the announcement from the ICCAC on Wednesday afternoon.

  • Destiny Lewis, the ICCAC Player of the Year, heads to Neosho, MO with 29 home runs, tied for third-most in the NJCAA, and a .468 batting average.
  • Freshman Julia Kwakernaak, a first-team All-Region 11 selection will bring a team-high 14-game hitting streak after hitting .750 in the region tournament.
  • Six different players have hit at least eight home runs on the year as the Warriors rank fifth in the nation with 101 team home runs, the fourth-most in a single season in school history.
  • In the circle, the Warrior staff is anchored by aces Madie Anderson and Ryann Cheek who have combined for 28 wins on the year. Cheek ranks fifth nationally with a 0.92 earned run average.

SCOUTING THE ROUGHRIDERS

Crowder, nine-time District champions and the 1986 national champions, will host this year's District championship after sweeping through the NJCAA Region 16 Tournament.

  • The Roughriders enter the tournament on a 13-game winning streak, including a four-game sweep of the region tournament. Crowder outscored its four opponents 35-4.
  • The Crowder pitching staff has tossed 17 shutouts on the year, fifth-most in the nation while the offense boasts the sixth-most stolen bases in the NJCAA with 165 on the year.
  • Chelsea Beville, who pitched against the Warriors in last year's District tournament, sports a 17-5 record on the year with a team-best 1.85 earned run average and 218 strikeouts.
  • Offensively, 10 different players are batting above .320, including Laynee Tapp's .432 mark. Alyssa Jennings powers the Roughrider offense with a team-high 19 home runs along with 58 RBI.
  • The Roughriders are led by first-year head coach Josh Barnes who came to Crowder from NJCAA member Angelina College (TX).

WHAT'S AT STAKE

An automatic bid to the NJCAA DI Softball National Championship at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, AL May 23-27. The Midwest District winner will be one of 16 District champions to compete for a national championship.
