WARRIORS TAKE ICCAC OPENER 31-14

Centerville, IA – The Indian Hills Men's Wrestling squad opened up the 2022-23 campaign with a 31-14 Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) victory over North Iowa Area Community College on Tuesday night. The Warriors improve to 3-0 all-time in conference duals vs. the Trojans.

In the season-opener at the Multi-Purpose Building on the Indian Hills Centerville campus, the Warriors hosted NIACC in the first-ever ICCAC men's and women's doubleheader dual. The women defeated NIACC 35-14 to open the night before the men rolled to its first dual win of the year.

Freshman Riley Bettich (Stevensville, MI/Crown Point), coming off an impressive showing at the Luther Hill Invite that resulted in a second-place finish, opened the night Tuesday with a pin in the 125lb weight class. Bettich scored the fall in just 1:02 in the opening round to spot the Warriors six points.

Sophomore Matthew Lewis (Centerville, IA/Centerville) brought in a major decision at the 149lb weight class after defeated Ryker Pentz 9-0. Lewis built an 8-0 lead through two periods before finishing off his opponent with the shutout.

The Warriors received three strong performances despite earning a loss in their respective weight class. Michael Lonnay (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan), trailing 6-3 after two periods, forced overtime in the 157lb weight class but eventually fell 9-7. Cade Molyneux (Sigourney, IA/Sigoruney) dropped a narrow 3-2 decision in the 165lb class and Tobias Bell (Chicago, IL/Curie) fell in the final seconds in the 197lb weight class and dropped a 2-1 decision.

Freshman Joshua Gaye (Des Moines, IA/Mooseheart Academy) capped the night with a thrilling victory in the heavyweight division. Trailing 2-1 with under 10 seconds remaining in the third period, Gaye took advantage of a restart and scored two points just before the final horn sounded to earn the victory for the Warriors.

The Warriors have now won each of its three season-opening duals in program history. Indian Hills is now 10-2 all-time in conference duals.
