KINGERY, EAST LEAD WARRIORS AT LUTHER HILL

Indianola, IA – The Indian Hills Men's Wrestling team saw 13 individuals place at the Luther Hill Invitational on Saturday, including five top-three finishers and a pair of first-place medalists.

Competing in the team's first open of the year, Ayden Kingery (Altoona, IA/Southeast Polk) took top honors in the 157lb bracket while Jaquan East (Kokomo, IN/Kokomo) captured the 174lb bracket for the Warriors. Braulio Cavazos (Atlanta, GA/Campellsville) finished second overall in the 165 bracket while Yaveion Freeman (Alton, IL/Alton) placed third in the 149lb bracket and Isaac Gibbs (Prosper, TX/Rock Hill) took third in the 125lb bracket.

In total, 29 individuals competed at the annual event in Indianola hosted by Simpson College.

Kingrey made his season debut for the Warriors and cruised through the 157lb bracket. Kingrey scored a tech fall by a score of 17-2 to set the tone in the opening round. Kingrey followed up with a pin in 5:56 to advance to the semifinals before earning an 11-5 decision for a spot in the title bout. Kingrey scored an 8-5 sudden victory for the Warriors to take the top spot on the podium.

On his way to the title, Kingrey knocked off three Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) opponents along the way, including North Iowa Area Community College's Tanner Warden in the finals.

After opening the season with a dual victory on Thursday night, East continued his dominant stretch to open the season with the 174lb title. East opened the day with a first round pin in 2:23 followed by a narrow 8-7 decision in the quarterfinals. After a medical forfeit in the semifinals advanced East to the championship, the freshman scored a 4-1 sudden victory over Brian Petry of Cornell College for his first collegiate open title.

Cavazos picked up four consecutive victories to advance to the championship finals in the 165lb bracket. Cavazos earned a sudden victory in the opener, an 18-2 tech fall, a 9-5 decision, and a 10-4 decision before being knocked off with a sudden victory loss in the title match.

In the 125lb bracket, Gibbs scored a second round fall to open the day and followed up with an impressive 15-4 major decision. Gibbs was upended in the semifinal round, but battled back through the consolation bracket and capped the day with an 18-5 major decision to place third overall.

Freeman posted a 5-1 record on the day to place third overall as the freshman scored an opening round fall, a second round 5-1 decision, and an 8-4 decision in the quarterfinals before falling short in the semifinals.

The Warriors saw fourth-place finishes from Steven Luedtke (Baltimore, MD/Dunbar) in the 133lb bracket, Paul Ishikawa (East Peoria, IL/Illini Bluffs) in the 141lb bracket, Thomas Stuhlman (Saint Peters, MO/Francis Howell) in the 157lb bracket, and Ronald Butler (Homestead, FL/Miami Palmetto) in the 174lb bracket.

Steven Marquez (Rock Island, IL/Rock Island) took fifth overall in the 184lb bracket while Noah Iobe (Mendon, MI/Mendon) placed fifth in the 285lb bracket. Ja'marcus Smith (Detroit, MI/Glenville State) and Raul Romero (Kansas City, MO/Raytown South) each placed sixth overall in the 125lb bracket.

The Warriors are back in dual action November 8 with an ICCAC matchup vs. Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, IA.
