WARRIORS TIE COUGARS ON CAMARGO'S GOAL

Ottumwa, IA – The Indian Hills Women's Soccer team drew a 1-1 tie with No. 19 Illinois Central to open the team's 2023 season on Saturday at the IHCC Classic.

After a scoreless opening 45 minutes of action, Illinois Central struck first with a penalty kick in the 53rd minute to take the lead over the Warriors early on in the second half. Indian Hills saw its fair share of chances throughout the match, but finally hit paydirt in the 81st minute as Gabi Camargo (Bogotá, Colombia/Colegio Justo Victor Charry) buried a shot to net the equalizer. The two sides went scoreless the remainder of the way to end the game in a draw.

As a team, the Warriors outshot the Cougars 15-4, including a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal. Indian Hills upped its attack in the second half with a 10-2 shot advantage. The Warriors also edged the Cougars 5-2 in corner kicks on the day.

Freshman keeper María Melendez (Aragua, Venezuela/Aragua Estudiantil) earned the result in net for the Warriors, making one save in her collegiate debut.

Camargo's first collegiate goal came at the 80:13 mark of the second half as the freshman gave the Warriors the equalizer they were looking for. Sophomore Milena Leon (Quito, Ecuador/British International School of Houston) played a long ball from the midfield that found a streaking Maika Nchana (Barcelona, Spain/INS Torras I Bages) near the endline. Nchana played a one-touch pass over the outstretched arms of the Cougars' keeper and Camargo buried the one-timer.

The Warriors return to action Sunday morning on the final day of the IHCC Classic in Ottumwa. Originally scheduled for a 1:00 PM start, Indian Hills will now take on No. 16 Motlow State Community College at 11:00 AM.
