KING, DIAZ LEAD WARRIORS AT YORK OPEN

York, NE – Freshmen Dutchess King (Lansing, IL/Thornton Fractional South) and Shammilka Miranda Diaz (Puerto Rico/Eugenio Guerra Cruz) took home top honors at the York Open to lead the No. 1 nationally ranked Indian Hills Women's Wrestling team at the York Open on Saturday. In total, five individuals placed for the Warriors.

King, the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the nation in the 101lb weight class took home first-place in 101lb bracket for the Warriors after going 3-0 on the day. King had previously placed third in two separate open tournaments for the Warriors before earning top honors on Saturday. The freshman scored a fall in 1:13 in the quarterfinal round before taking a 15-2 tech fall in the semifinal matchup to advance to the championship bout. King secured another tech fall with a 12-0 victory to earn medalist honors.

Miranda Diaz entered Saturday's action with a 6-2 record and a previous third-place finish to her name this year before going undefeated in all four matches Saturday for her first collegiate open title in the 116lb bracket. Miranda Diaz earned a 10-0 tech fall in the opening round before two consecutive falls advanced the freshman to the finals. Miranda Diaz posted a quarterfinal round fall in 1:37 and a semifinal fall in 2:24. In the championship, Miranda Diaz used a 9-4 decision to claim top honors.

Sophomore Alondra Rosado Martinez (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Colegio Amarlieen) earned a second-place finish for the Warriors in the 136lb bracket. Martinez opened the day with three consecutive victories – two falls and a tech fall before dropping the championship match. Martinez fell in the title bout to Gianno Moreno of Friends University, ranked No. 10 in the nation in the 136lb class.

Karla Padilla Zepeda (South Weber, UT/North Ridge), ranked No. 2 in the latest individual national rankings, placed third overall in the 235lb bracket for the Warriors. The freshman dropped her opening round match but bounced back to win the final three matches of the day. Zepeda scored a fall in the consolation semifinals in just 36 seconds before earning an 8-1 decision in the third place match.

Freshman Javanica Mickens (Orlando, FL/Jones), who placed sixth overall at the team's last open on December 3, placed fourth overall in the 116lb bracket on Saturday. Mickens competed in a total of six bouts at the York Open, the most of any Warrior on Saturday. The freshman earned an opening round fall before dropping to the consolation bracket. Mickens then scored three consecutive wins – two 10-0 tech falls and a pin to advance to the third-place match but eventually bowed out to finish fourth overall.

The Warriors are now set to return to Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play on January 18 at No. 3 nationally ranked Iowa Western Community College.
