Council Bluffs, IA – The highest ranked dual meet in National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Women's Wrestling history is set for Friday afternoon as No. 1 Indian Hills travels to No. 3 Iowa Western Community College at Reiver Arena.

SETTING THE STAGE

The two remaining unbeaten teams in the ICCAC conference are set to square off Friday in the first-ever NJCAA Women's Wrestling dual featuring two top-3 nationally ranked squads.

The top-ranked and two-time defending JCNC National Champion Indian Hills squad enters with a 2-0 dual record. The Warriors have outscored their previous two conference foes, NIACC and Ellsworth, by a combined score of 60-14.

Iowa Western, who placed 4th at the 2022 JCNC National Championship in Roseburg, OR, enters Friday's dual with a 2-0 league record. The Reivers have scored a conference-best 74 points in its two matchups while allowing just 24 points against.

MAT NOTES

  • Both teams are coming off strong showings at the York Open in York, NE on January 14. Dutchess King (101lbs) and Shammilka Miranda Diaz (116lbs) both took first-place finishes at the open while five individuals placed overall. The Reivers placed seven individuals, including three second-place showings.
  • Indian Hills is 9-3 on the year vs. Iowa Western in open tournaments. Both teams squared off multiple times at the Waldorf Open on November 12 and the Doane Open on December 3. 
  • The 2022-23 season marks the first year of sanctioned women's wrestling at the NJCAA level. 

NATIONALLY RANKED INDIVIDUALS

The two ICCAC squads combine for 31 nationally ranked individuals in the latest NJCAA polls. The Warriors boast the most individuals in the nation with 17 while the Reivers rank third overall with 14.

SPREE'S NOTES

Along with the women's top-3 nationally ranked matchup, the Indian Hills and Iowa Western men's wrestling squads will square off at 2:00 PM on Friday. The Warriors enter the dual ranked No. 9 in the nation while the Reivers are No. 2 in the nation.

"The fans should be in store for two amazing duals," stated head coach Cole Spree. "Multiple nationally ranked individual match ups should happen throughout the night. The ICCAC has been known to produce some of the top NJCAA duals every year on the men's side and now we get to be part of it on the women's side as well. Being part of the biggest dual to date in the NJCAA is great and I am excited for our student-athletes to experience it."

WHAT'S NEXT

Indian Hills will host Iowa Central in the team's final conference dual of the regular season. The Warriors will take on the Tritons at 6:00 PM on January 25 as part of a doubleheader dual with the men's squads.

The dual will also serve as Sophomore Night for eight individuals that will be recognized prior to the start of the match.
