2023 marks the first year of sanctioned wrestling at the NJCAA level for women's wrestling, and the Indian Hills Warriors head into the weekend as the top-ranked team in the land.

Indian Hills made history in each of the past two seasons after winning both the team and team duals national championships at the Junior College National Championship (JCNC) in Roseburg, OR. The Warriors earned the first-ever title in 2021 before repeating as champs in 2022.

25 individuals have earned All-American honors over the last two seasons for the Warriors while seven have claimed individual national titles.

MAT NOTES

  • 21 individuals will head to the Mid-America Center to compete for the Warriors this weekend with 18 of them grabbing a top-eight seed in their respective bracket.
  • The Warriors tied with Umpqua Community College for the most individuals to earn a bid to the national invitational.
  • ICCAC foes Iowa Western and Iowa Central each earned 14 individual selections.
  • Kennedy Shropshire (116), Liannette Ortiz (123), and Eliana Bommarito (235) have all earned the top seed in their bracket for the Warriors.

WARRIORS TO WATCH

Six individuals will suit up this weekend with previous national championship experience, including two national champions and a national runner-up.

  • Alondra Rosado Martinez earned back-to-back JCNC All-American honors, including the 2022 national championship in the 136lb weight class. Rosado Martinez is ranked No. 2 in this year's field.
  • Kennedy Shropshire won the 2022 JCNC National Championship at the 116lb weight class and enters this weekend as the top overall seed heading into the tournament.
  • Malachite Chunn placed second overall last year in the 109lb JCNC bracket. Chunn heads into this year's tournament as the No. 4 overall seed.
  • Lynexa Adams, Malia Cook, and Liannette Ortiz each bring national championship experience this weekend after competing at the JCNC nationals a year ago.

WOMEN ON THE GRAND STAGE

For the first time in college wrestling history at any level, the men's and women's wrestling national championships will all happen under one roof on the same weekend as the 2023 NJCAA Men's Wrestling Championship will run concurrently with the women's schedule this weekend.

The NJCAA announced women's wrestling as an emerging sport in 2020 while the 2023 season marks the first-ever invitational championship.

SPREE'S NOTES

"This year we have a lot of new faces in the lineup," stated head coach Cole Spree. "I'm excited to watch them create their own legacy individually and as a team this weekend."
