10 WARRIORS ADVANCE TO SEMIS ON DAY 1

Council Bluffs, IA – In the first-ever National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Women's Wrestling Invitational, the Indian Hills Women's Wrestling squad has jumped out to a 25.5 point lead after the first day of action at the Mid-America Center.

The Warriors scored 190 team points on the opening day of the inaugural event to hold a marginal lead over second-place Umpqua Community College (OR). Indian Hills will send 10 individuals into the semifinal round of their respective brackets on Saturday while eight additional individuals are still alive in the consolation bracket.

Action gets underway at 9:30 AM with the championship semifinals and the consolation semifinals at 11:00 AM. The consolation finals are slated for 12:15 PM while the championship matchups are scheduled for a 6:00 PM start.

101lbs

No. 3 ranked Dutchess King (Lansing, IL/Thornton Fractional South) scored a 10-0 tech fall in the quarterfinals over No. 6 Maillen Tran of Southwestern Oregon Community College to advance to the semis. King will face No. 2 Tenley Jones of Carl Albert State College (OK) Saturday.


109lbs

No. 4 seeded Malachite Chunn (Jacksonville, NC/Jacksonville) scored an opening round 10-0 tech fall before falling in the quarterfinals to No. 5 Leila Sidhu of Umpqua. Chunn picked up a consolation win with a fall in 4:14 to advance to the consolation semis on Saturday.


116lbs

The Warriors will feature two individuals in the championship semis of the 116lb bracket as No. 3 Shammilka Miranda Diaz (Puerto Rico/Eugenio Guerra Cruz) and No. 8 Javanica Mickens (Orlando, FL/Jones) advanced with two wins each.

Miranda Diaz scored an opening round pin in 28 seconds before a quarterfinal win with a 10-0 tech fall. Miranda Diaz will match up with Southwestern Oregon's No. 2 seed Kendall Martin in the semis.

Mickens earned a 14-4 tech fall in the opening round before upsetting teammate and top-ranked seed Kennedy Shropshire (Lawrenceville, GA/__) in the quarterfinals with a pin in 2:52. Mickens will square off against No. 4 Flavia Nagatani of Iowa Western on Saturday.


123lbs

Top-seeded Lianette Ortiz (Kissimmee, FL/Gateway) used back-to-back 10-0 tech falls to advance to the semifinal round on Saturday. Ortiz will match up with No. 4 Victoriana Kim of Southwestern Oregon.

Unseeded Taylor Angle (Plains, MT/Plains) scored an opening round upset with a 10-0 tech fall over No. 6 Anna Sondall of Iowa Central Community College. Angle dropped her quarterfinal matchup before earning two consolation pins, both in less than 44 seconds to advance to the consolation semis.


136lbs

No. 2 seed and returning national champion Alondra Rosado Martinez (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Colegio Amarlieen) cruised to the semifinal round with a 10-0 tech fall in just 1:39 of mat time in the opening round before a pin in the second round in 1:12. Rosado Martinez will meet up with No. 3 seed Corrie Williams of Snow College (UT).

No. 5 Malia Cook (Muscatine, IA/Muscatine) scored an opening round pin in just 58 seconds to advance before falling to No. 4 seed Princess Altsis of Iowa Central. In the consolation bracket, Cook scored a fall in 47 seconds and a 10-0 tech fall to advance to the consolation semis on Saturday.


143lbs

Two Warriors remain in the consolation bracket at 143lbs as Lynexa Adams (Willard, MO/Willard) and A'myrha Dylina-Syyan (Seattle, WA/Waynesville) advanced to day two.

Adams, unseeded entering the tournament, scored an upset over No. 8 Avery Shinkle of Umpqua with a pin in 59 seconds. Adams eventually fell in the next round to the top seed in the bracket, but advanced in the consolation bracket with a pin over teammate Kaitlyn Hain (Wellington, KS/Wellington), the No. 4 seed in the bracket.

Dylina-Syyan dropped her quarterfinal bout but advanced in the consolation bracket with a 12-2 tech fall over No. 7 seed Attalia Cano of Umpqua.


155lbs

Sophomore Suraveive Robertson (Garner, AR/Beebe) put together an impressive showing as the No. 3 seed for the Warriors. Robertson advanced to the semifinals with an opening round pin in 1:33 and a quarterfinal fall in 53 seconds. Robertson will match up with No. 2 seed Ana Barnoski of Carl Albert State on Saturday.

Nolani Snagg (Katy, TX/Seven Lakes) scored a major upset in the opening round as the unseeded freshman earned a 6-3 decision over No. 4 Hailey Jo Ahsmush of Southwestern Oregon. Snagg dropped her quarterfinal match before bowing out in the consolation bracket.


170lbs

The Lone Warrior in the 170lb bracket, freshman Yaracely Saenz (Bernalillo, NM/Bernalillo) scored an overtime upset in the quarterfinals over No. 4 Sarah Balbarino of Southwestern Oregon. Saenz will matchup with top-seeded Autumn Perez of Umpqua in the semifinal round on Saturday.


191lbs

Two Warriors remain in the 191lb bracket, including freshman Tiffany White (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park) in the championship semifinals. White, the No. 6 seed, scored a fall in 3:50 over No. 3 seed Valerie Osborne of Southwestern Oregon to move to the semis. White will match up with No. 2 Alexa Garcia of Southwestern Oregon.

No. 4 seed Norma Alejondro (Olathe, CO/Olathe) dropped her opening round matchup but battled through the consolation bracket to reach the consolation semis. Alejondro scored a fall in 5:15 over the No. 3 seed and a 4-0 decision over the No. 8 seed to advance.


235lbs

In perhaps the strongest bracket for the Warriors, three individuals advanced to the final day of competition, including two of the four semifinalists.

Top-seeded Eliana Bommarito (Brighton, MI/Hartland) needed just 35 seconds of mat time to advance on Friday as the freshman scored a fall over No. 8 seeded Aurora Parsons of Southwestern Oregon. Bommarito will face No. 4 Valerie Smith of NIACC, an opponent that Bommarito pinned in 28 seconds back on Nov. 8.

No. 2 seeded Karla Padilla Zepeda (South Weber, UT/North Ridge) earned a fall in 1:05 in the quarterfinals to advance to Saturday. The freshman will match up with No. 3 Faith Wooley of Umpqua.

No. 6 seeded Brooke Burns (Wellington, KS/Wellington) fell in the quarterfinal round but advanced in the consolation bracket with a fall in 2:04 over No. 7 Addisson Hershberger of Iowa Central.
