BOMMARITO MAKES HISTORY FOR TEAM USA

Centerville, IA – Defending national champion Eliana Bommarito (Brighton, MI/Hartland) of the Indian Hills Women's Wrestling team brought home a number of awards on the world stage over the weekend, continuing an unprecedented stretch in international competition.

Competing in Constanta, Romania, Bommarito brought home two World gold medals for Team USA to make history on for the Red, White, and Blue. Bommarito took top honors in the 70kg weight Class at the United World Wrestling (UWW) Beach World Series before taking Gold at the U20 Beach World Championships on Sunday. For her efforts, Bommarito has been named this week's USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week, announced by USA Wrestling.

Bommarito entered the weekend as the No. 11 ranked wrestler in the world in the Beach World Series rankings, but made an improbable run to earn the Gold medal. Bommarito took down the No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 ranked wrestlers in the world to secure the top spot on the podium.

With the title, Bommarito becomes the first-ever U.S. Senior wrestler to win a gold medal at a UWW international Beach Wrestling event.

While Bommarito's victories over top-ranked wrestlers is impressive, the Michigan native did not allow a point throughout three Group matches while also earning 3-0 victories in both the semifinal and championship rounds. Bommarito defeated No. 4 Cataline Axente of Romania in the championship.

At the U20 Beach World Championships on Sunday, Bommarito won all three Group B matches without allowing a point. Bommarito needed just 19 seconds in the semifinals to win 3-0 before securing a pin in six seconds in the championship round. Throughout the course of Bommarito's five matches, none lasted more than 22 seconds.

Bommarito also becomes the first-ever U.S. wrestler to win a U20 Beach World Championship Gold medal and is the only U.S. wrestler to own two UWW Beach gold medals.

Bommarito has continued to make waves in the wrestling world after an impressive freshman season for the Warriors. Bommarito took home the individual National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Women's Wrestling National Championship while leading the Warriors to its third consecutive team national title.
