BOMMARITO, KING STAR AT GRAND VIEW OPEN

 

Des Moines, IA – A pair of defending national champions took top honors at the Grand View Open on Saturday to lead the No. 1 nationally ranked Indian Hills Women's Wrestling squad. In total nine individuals compete against the likes of four-year universities.

The 2023 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Women's Wrestling 235lb national champion, Eliana Bommarito (Hartland, MI/Brighton) cruised to a first-place finish in the Gold 235lb Open Division with four victories. The sophomore scored three consecutive pins – a  first round fall in 17 seconds, a quarterfinal round fall in 20 seconds, and a semifinal round fall in 16 seconds to advance to the championship round.

Bommarito scored a 9-2 decision over Ottawa University's Hannah Jackson in the championship bout to run away with the title.

Sophomore Dutchess King (Lansing, IL/Thornton Fractional South) secured top honors in the 1001lb bracket with three victories for the Warriors. The defending national champion from a year ago earned a quarterfinal 10-0 tech fall before securing a 20 second pin in the semifinals. King earned a 12-2 tech fall over Emma Lewis of Iowa Central Community College in the title match.

Sophomore Tiffany White (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park & River Forest produced a strong showing in the 191lb bracket for the Warriors. The No. 1 ranked wrestler in the NJCAA won three consecutive matches to advance to the championship round. After an opening round forfeit win, White secured a quarterfinal pin in 1:33 before taking an 8-0 decision in the semifinals.

Saturday's competition served as the Warriors' final regular season competition before postseason action gets underway. Next up for Indian Hills is the 2024 NJCAA National Invitational March 1-2 in Council Bluffs, IA.
