Genesis Gilmore, Women's Wrestling

Ottumwa, IA – The Indian Hills Athletic Department has announced its Hy-Vee Female Student-Athletes of the Month. Freshman Genesis Gilmore (Clarksville, TN/Montgomery Central) of the national champion Indian Hills Women's Wrestling squad has been honored for her academic and athletic accomplishments throughout the month.

Gilmore put a bow on a breakout freshman season in March, winning the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) individual national championship at 155lbs to lead the Warriors to their fourth consecutive team national title.

Competing at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, IA, Gilmore produced a remarkable run through the tournament that resulted in the program's first-ever 155lb individual national champion. Gilmore scored three consecutive pins to advance to the semifinals with each match lasting no more than 1:12. Gilmore secured a fall in 25 seconds against the No. 2 seed from Snow College to earn a spot in the championship bout. The freshman earned a 14-4 tech fall in the championship match to knock off No. 1 nationally ranked and defending national champion Ferny Hernandez of Iowa Western Community College. In total, Gilmore needed less than nine minutes of mat time to secure the national title.

Academically, Gilmore was also recognized in March as a National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American and previously was named to the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Academic All-Region First-Team following the fall term.

Each month, with the support of the local Ottumwa Hy-Vee, the Indian Hills Athletic Department selects a male and female student-athlete of the month based on their academic and athletic performances throughout the previous month. Fans can catch interviews of each student-athlete from Ottumwa's South Hy-Vee on the GoHillsTV Facebook Page.
