MONAGHAN NAMED NJCAA AD OF THE YEAR

Ottumwa, IA – Dr. Brett Monaghan, Indian Hills Community College Vice President of Student Development & Operations and Athletic Director has been named the 2024 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Athletic Director of the Year, announced Wednesday night in Charlotte, NC.

Honored at the 2024 NJCAA Convention Awards Ceremony on Wednesday night, Monaghan becomes just the fifth individual to earn the national honor as the association's top Athletic Director. Monaghan is in his ninth year at the helm of the Indian Hills Athletic Department and 12th year overall at the college.

Monaghan earned the prestigious honor through his work at the institutional, conference, and national levels. Monaghan led the Indian Hills athletic department to its most decorated year in school history in 2022-23 as Indian Hills placed sixth overall in the National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) Daktronics Cup standings among more than 500 junior college programs nationwide.

Under Monaghan's direction, the Warriors have established themselves as one of the premiere junior college departments in the NJCAA, adding multiple sports over the last several seasons. The Warriors have seen tremendous growth and success through the additions of its track & field, men's and women's wrestling, sports shooting, and competitive cheer & dance programs, along with the most recent sport offering, women's golf. Over the past 13 months of competition, the Warriors have brought home four team national titles while 15 programs have competed in their respective national championships.

Academically, the Warriors most recently saw its most successful year in the classroom as a department-record 245 individuals earned Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Academic All-Region honors during the 2023 fall term after a cumulative 3.12 GPA, the highest in school history.

Along with his commitment to Indian Hills Athletics, Monaghan serves multiple capacities at the conference and national levels. Monaghan currently chairs three national committees – the NJCAA Sports Governance Committee, the NJCAA DI Softball Committee, and the NJCAA Women's Wrestling Committee. Additionally, Monaghan serves as the NJCAA Region 11 Women's Director.

The Indian Hills Athletic Department becomes the first NJCAA program to earn all three of the NJCAA Annual Awards since its inception in 2020. Monaghan joins Head Athletic Trainer Kristin Mayson who was named the 2020 NJCAA Athletic Trainer of the Year and Coordinator of Media Relations Bryan Stewart who was named the 2022 NJCAA Sports Information Director of the Year.
