THIRTEEN STRAIGHT: WARRIORS SWEEP TIGERS

THIRTEEN STRAIGHT: WARRIORS SWEEP TIGERS

MARSHALLTOWN, IA –  Indian Hills kept its record unblemished on the season with a sweep of a pair of games over Marshalltown at Shawn Williams Field Sunday afternoon, 11-1 in five innings and 11-2 in seven innings.

The Warriors are now 13-0 overall and 8-0 in the ICCAC, and IHCC Head Coach Matthew Torrez knows what the recipe for success has been.

"We just keep getting quality starts from our pitching staff," Torrez said.  "When that happens, our hitters are able to relax a little."

Game one saw sophomore starter Wyatt Wendell run his record to 3-0 in his third outing.  The Warrior right hander went the distance on the hill tossing a five hitter with just one walk while fanning six.  The Tigers strung together three hits in the fourth to plate their only run.

IHCC struck first with three runs in the top of the third in support of Wendell.  Billy Rivera and Sam Fortier both tripled around a Ren Tachioka walk to put the Warriors up 2-0.  A C.J. Castillo sacrifice fly scored Fortier to make it 3-0, Indian Hills.

Ricardo Van Grieken drove in IHCC's fourth run in the fourth frame with a single to score Tucker Ebest who had doubled.  A Rivera single pushed Van Grieken across and the Warriors led 5-0.

"It seems like we get someone different every day that gives us a good game offensively," Torrez added. "If one guy is not having a good day, someone else steps up and gets it done at the plate.  When that happens, our chances of being successful are high, and we've seen a lot of it early in the season here."

MCC cut into the lead with their only run in the fourth, but IHCC set the stage for an early finish with six runs in the fifth.  The big blow in the inning came off the bat of Van Grieken who collected the Warriors third triple of the contest drive in two.

"We've been doing an outstanding job of maximizing our innings," Torrez explained. "When we have runners in scoring position, we get timely hits to cash in."

Rivera went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI while Fortier, Ebest and Van Grieken all had a pair of hits.  Van Grieken drove in three and Fortier plated two.

The outstanding run of tack-sharp starting pitching continued in the nightcap as the Warriors saw Maddux Hoaglund notch his second win of the season in a complete-game four-hit performance.  Hoaglund needed just 80 pitches over the seven innings of work and struck out eight while walking just one.  MCC got to Hoaglund in the first inning on a single, two wild pitches and a ground out. The Tigers only other run came in the fifth after a single, a hit batsmen and another single.

"Maddux has really settled in to his role as a starter, and is giving us quality starts," Torrez said.  "He's done a little of everything for us.  He's started as a catcher, moved to the outfield and is now a starting pitcher.  He's really just learning how to be pitcher, and is getting better every time out."

The Warriors kept the heat on in the nightcap, scoring in every inning except the second and the seventh.  IHCC's five-spot in the sixth inning broke open what was still a competitive 6-2 contest.

"It was great to see us keep putting pressure on by scoring in five of the seven innings," Torrez said.  "We did a great job of getting on base and putting pressure on their defense. The guys did a great job of scoring runners when they got in position again."

IHCC followed up its 11-hit attack in the opener with ten more in the nightcap, led by two-hit performances from Boucher, Dave Janssen and Tachioka. Rivera and Tachioka both had a double and Noel Perez tagged a homer in the fifth, his first of the season.

The two teams will finish their four-game set on Monday at Shawn Williams Field with another doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
