LEADING OFF

Indian Hills is back on the diamond this week with another trip to Millington, TN after the Warriors opened up the year last week with four-straight wins at the Flag City Classic.

  • The Warriors used two rallies on opening day last week to upend John Wood 9-7 and Lake Land 10-6 before rolling to wins over Lincoln Land (5-1) and St. Charles (11-1).
  • Six different players collected at least four hits on the weekend as the Warriors posted a .333 batting average with 14 extra base hits.
  • Logan Myers and Dylan Sayles each tallied a team-high five hits while Miguel Salazar batted .333 with a team-high six RBI
  • On the mound, the Warriors saw impressive performances from Andrei Gordeev, Kurtis Smith, and Cole Huebner who combined for just two earned runs allowed in 15 innings of work.
  • The pitching staff held the opposition to a .189 batting average while striking out 30 batters.

WEEKLY HONORS

Indian Hills sophomores Raul Torres and Andrei Gordeev swept the weekly ICCAC Athlete of the Week awards after leading the Warriors to four wins.

  • Torres was named the ICCAC Offensive Player of the Week after posting a team-high .571 batting average while driving in three runs and scoring two more. Torres delivered a key pinch hit run-scoring triple in the season-opening win over John Wood.
  • Gordeev opened up his sophomore campaign with ICCAC Pitcher of the Week honors after allowing just one earned run in six innings of work to knock off Lincoln Land 5-1. Gordeev struck out a career-high nine batters in the win.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS

Elgin will open up its 2024 campaign Friday afternoon with a single contest against Southeastern Community College in Millington before taking on the Warriors on Saturday.

  • The Spartans are coming off a 21-34 season.
  • Elgin returns two of its top three hitters from a year ago in Jaden Alberson (.327) and Charlie Jury (.321).
  • Saturday's matchup will be the first meeting between the two teams dating back to the 2011 season.
  • Elgin head coach Bill Angelo, in his 27th season at the helm, has recorded more than 750 victories with the Spartans.

SCOUTING THE PIONEERS

Volunteer State is off to a 3-5 start on the year, winning three of the team's last four outings.

  • All eight contests for the Pioneers have been played at home in Gallatin, TN.
  • The Pioneers are coming off a 34-21 season last year, the team's second consecutive winning season.
  • Volunteer State is hitting just .210 through eight games on the year, led by Connor Paul's .667 average (4-6).

SCOUTING THE TROJANS

Triton will open up its 2024 campaign on Saturday afternoon, the opening day of the Babe Howard JUCO Classic with a pair of games against Kaskaskia College (IL) and Southwest Tennessee Community College.

  • The Trojans posted a 37-20 record last year, nearly reaching the NJCAA Midwest District Tournament before falling in the NJCAA Region 4 Championship.
  • Indian Hills is 2-2 vs. the Trojans dating back to the 2011 season with all four contests occuring during the 2017 season.
  • The last meeting between the two clubs saw Indian Hills earn a 5-2 victory to advance in the 2017 NJCAA Midwest District Tournament.

SCOUTING THE ARCHERS

St. Louis has posted a 1-2 record through the opening portion of its schedule this year, including a 14-2 victory over Lake Land last week.

  • The Archers produced a 20-34 record last year.
  • The St. Louis pitching staff is averaging 11.21 K/9 throughout the first three games of the season this year.
  • Sunday's contest will be the first meeting between the two teams dating back through the 2011 season.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Warriors' road trip continues with a four-game series in Arkansas City, KS against Cowley Community College (KS), ranked No. 17 in the preseason NJCAA DI Baseball poll. Action gets underway March 1.
