FIRST PITCH

The Warriors will make a trip to Arkansas City, KS for the third consecutive season to take on the Cowley Tigers at the Cowley Baseball facility for a four-game, three-day series.

  • The Warriors head to Cowley with an 8-0 record, the team's best start since 2021 and just the third 8-0 start since 2003.
  • The Indian Hills pitching staff has thrived on the mound as the Warriors currently rank fifth in the nation with a 1.00 WHIP and 19th nationally ith a 3.67 ERA.
  • Andrei Gordeev, Tomoki Jitsukawa, and Kurtis Smith each own a 2-0 record to start the year.
  • Endi Jaquez and JJ Dutton have powered the offense, driving in a combined 16 runs wihle scoring a total of 18 more on the year.
  • After opening up with back-to-back weekends in Tennessee, this weekend's series at Cowley marks the Warriors' final road trip outside of the state of Iowa during the regular season.

WARRIORS IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS

For the first time since the preseason poll of the 2018 season, the Indian Hills Baseball team cracked the top-20 of the national rankings. The Warriors, who previously earned votes in multiple national polls during the 2022 season, checked in at No. 20 in the first NJCAA DI Baseball Poll of the regular season.

The Warriors closed out the 2017 season at No. 18 in the final regular season poll and checked in at No. 18 in the 2018 preseason NJCAA poll.

SCHOLL NABS WEEKLY HONOR

After a stellar outing in his first-career start on the mound, sophomore Jordan Scholl has been tapped as this week's Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) DI Baseball Pitcher of the Week.

Scholl twirled a gem in Millington, TN with six scoreless frames against Volunteer State Community College. Scholl needed just 63 pitches and faced 19 batters as the right-handed hurler allowed just two hits in the win. Scholl has not allowed a run in his two outings this year.

SERIES HISTORY

The two storied programs will be squaring off for a four-game series for the third consecutive season. The two sides have split the last eight matchups, with Indian Hills winning the last two.

2024 will mark the first time in the last three seasons that the Warriors are ranked ahead of the Tigers in the national poll prior to the first pitch of the series. Cowley was ranked No. 6 in 2022 and No. 17 in 2023.

Prior to the 2022 matchup between Indian Hills and Cowley, the previous meeting between the two clubs came in Grand Junction, CO for the JUCO World Series in both 1997 and 1998. Indian Hills defeated Cowley 11-6 in the second round in 1997 before falling to the Tigers in the elimination game 15-9. The Tigers went on to the win the World Series that year. In 1998, Indian Hills defeated Cowley 17-7 to advance to the elimination finals, but eventually fell to San Jacinto to place third overall. Cowley went on to win its second consecutive title.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS

Cowley has opened up the year with a 5-5 record. The Tigers entered the preseason national rankings at No. 17 but have dropped out of the first regular season poll after splitting its last four matchups with Iowa Western Community College.

  • The Tigers are coming off a 39-22 season last year after finishing as the national runner-up at the JUCO World Series in 2022.
  • Cowley is averaging 6.6 runs per ballgame, including a 14-run outburst in a 14-10 win over No. 5 Iowa Western on Feb. 23.
  • Three players are hitting over .400 on the year, led by Alex Conover's .452 (14-31) average to go along with six XBH.
  • The Tiger pitching staff owns a 7.83 earned run average heading into the weekend series, allowing 74 runs on the year.
  • Iziah Salinas has picked up two wins on the mound with 20 strikeouts and a 3.72 ERA in just 9.2 innings of work.
  • The Tigers have made 11 trips to the JUCO World Series with the two national titles in.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Warriors will look to make its home debut on March 8 with a three-team, three-day series at Pat Daugherty Field. The Warriors are set to host Southwestern Community College for a doubleheader on March 8 and Iowa Lakes Community College on March 10. Iowa Lakes and Southwestern will meet for a doubleheader on March 9. All games will count towards the ICCAC standings and can be seen live on GoHillsTV.
