Warriors Throttle SCC

Ottumwa -- Buoyed by a season-high 14 3-pointers and a 65-point second half, Indian Hills advanced to the championship game of the Region 11 postseason tournament with a 106-69 walloping of Southeastern at the Hellyer Center on Wednesday night. Stretching their current winning streak to 11 games and their head-to-head streak against SCC to nine, IHCC now prepares to battle Iowa Western in the postseason title game on the Warriors' home court on Saturday night.

The Warriors showed some effects of an eight-day layoff since beating Moberly (Mo.) on Feb. 21 in a first half in which they were outrebounded by the Blackhawks, yet still took a nine-point lead to intermission. They came out flying in the second half, though, erupting for 34 points and five 3s in the first nine minutes of the half en route to picking up their third win of the season against SCC.

"After a week off, we did a good job at keeping our focus, teamwork, and intensity right where we left off at Moberly," said IHCC coach Hank Plona. "Our guys did a great job of coming out and competing for 40 minutes."

Indian Hills had six double-figure scorers, led by Ivan Aurrecoechea with 17 and Tre Hansbrough with 14. All of Hansbrough's points came in the second half when the Warriors were running away from the Blackhawks. Ten of IHCC's 14 triples were drained in the final half, three by Hansbrough and two each from Antonio "Booman" Williams, Kenny Wormley and Karl Harris.

It was Chris McNeal's back-to-back 3s in the first half -- in less than 30 seconds -- that helped ignite the IHCC offense. McNeal wound up with 12 points and dished out eight assists. "Chris was great all night," Plona said. "He was aggressive in transition and able to make plays for teammates. Our transition offense was effective all night and he was the key to that." Indeed, the Warriors forced SCC into multiple bad shots and turnovers in a stretch of the second half when the lead ballooned from 45-34 to 77-48 in a seven-minute span.

After being outrebounded in the opening half, Indian Hills came back to win the board battle, 35-27, and committed only nine turnovers.

Aurrecoechea was 7-9 from the field, Hansbrough was 5-7 and Jermaine Ukaegbu made four of five shots and had a season-best nine points.

IHCC connected on 65 percent of its shots in the second half, 71 percent from three, and made all seven free throws in putting together a solid final 20 minutes on both ends of the floor. "Our defense has continued to be very good in the last 11 games," according to Plona, "and we defended well for both halves. We prevented (SCC scoring leader Rayford) Albright from getting going, and did a great job rebounding the ball in the second half."

Damarri Moore's 16 points led SCC and Albright had 15.

The Blackhawks close the season at 14-17. The Warriors take a 27-4 mark into the weekend game with Iowa Western, who is 25-6 after blasting Northeast (Neb.) 108-87 in Wednesday's other semifinal. IHCC and Iowa Western split their regular-season matchups, each winning a close game on their home court. Tip time is 7:00 at the Hellyer Center on Saturday evening.
