Allen, Gatling Spark IHCC to Victory

BB vs. KCC

Quincy, Illinois -- Sixth-ranked Indian Hills overcame a ragged first-half performance and put together a 56-point second half to defeat Kankakee CC, 86-67, on Friday in the first game of the Town & Country Inn and Suites Classic, hosted by John Wood CC.

Indian Hills and Kankakee combined to go 0-for-21 from 3-point range in the opening half, contributing to the uneven pace of the first 20 minutes.  The Warriors had a 12-point lead cut to three points by intermission.  And when Kankakee scored the first two buckets of the final half, IHCC found itself trailing, 31-30.

That's when the Warriors took off.  Tomas Woldetensae jump-started the offense with a 3-pointer to allow Indian Hills to regain the lead.  Jamel Allen took a feed from Antonio "Booman" Williams for a dunk, then Allen buried a three and the Warriors had run off eight points in just over a minute.

"We looked like we were rushing things in the first half," coach Hank Plona said.  "In the second half our defense created some offense and, then, we stayed comfortable, played at a better pace, and were able to make shots."

IHCC eventually built the lead to 22 points.  Both Allen and Shane Gatling had six second-half field goals and they provided 28 points after halftime.

"Shane and Jamel did a great job of playing with confidence on offense and making big plays," according to Plona.  "They really got us going in the second half."

Allen ended up with 17 points, tying a career high.  Gatling scored 15 and James Jean-Marie had 12 off the bench.

Micah Rosser's 15 topped Kankakee.

After being shut out from behind the arc in the first half, Indian Hills drained eight in the final 20 minutes.  Five different players made a three.

The Warriors will put their unbeaten record on the line Saturday afternoon when they battle John Wood on the Blazers' home court.  John Wood shellacked Johnson County CC, 91-51, in Friday's second game.
