Indian Hills Cruises to 12th Straight

BB vs KCC

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills scored the final 10 points of the opening half and the first seven of the second period and used that 17-0 spurt to pull away from Kankakee CC in a 100-50 drubbing on Friday night in the Hy-Vee Classic at the Hellyer Center.

The 10-0 run to end the first half came on the heels of eight unanswered points by the visitors that allowed Kankakee to pull to within 40-29.  Javier Valeiras banked in a 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer and by the time the Cavaliers scored in the second half they were down 57-29.  The hosts gradually pulled away after that -- equalling KCC's point total for the night with 50 points in each half.

Kankakee was coming off an impressive victory at DII No. 4 Southwestern the night before, but ran out of gas in the second half, when they shot only 24 percent.  Indian Hills wound up shooting 59 percent and made 9-of-20 threes.

Shane Gatling paced the IHCC attack with 21 points.  Antonio "Booman" Williams threw in 19 and Ivan Aurrecoechea and Jamel Allen chipped in 12 apiece.  Connor Murrell hit double-digits for the fifth game in a row, scoring 10.

The Warriors ran off the first 10 points of the contest.  Kankakee got to within seven, but never drew closer than that as IHCC improved its season-opening winning streak to 12.

The wire-to-wire decision was the second for Indian Hills against Kankakee, this one considerably easier than the 86-67 triumph last month, a game in which the Warriors actually trailed early in the second half of a match played in Quincy, Illinois.

Valeiras had a career-high 10 rebounds, a figure matched by his fellow Spaniard, Aurrecoechea.

The final game before a 12-day break for Christmas will be against No. 24 Harcum on Saturday night at 7:00.  Harcum dropped a 104-99 decision to Southeastern in Friday's first contest to put their record at 9-2.  Their only other loss was to top-rated Northwest Florida State, 108-100.
