Gatling's Long-Range Shooting Buries Central Florida

IHCC vs. CF

Mesa, Arizona -- Shane Gatling scored 34 points and made seven 3-pointers as Indian Hills romped to a 91-62 win over Central Florida in the opening round of the 2017 Fiesta Bowl Junior College Shootout on Thursday night.  The victory was the 14th straight to start the season for third-ranked IHCC and puts them in the semifinals opposite the host Mesa Thunderbirds.

Gatling had five of his threes by halftime and had already equaled his previous season-high point total by intermission, scoring 23 of the Warriors' 41 first-half points, including 17 of their first 22.  He made 11-of-19 shots for the game, 7-of-12 from behind the arc.

Indian Hills broke away from a 26-all tie with a 15-4 run to close out the opening half.  The first three points and the final four in that spurt all came from the foul line where the Warriors enjoyed a huge advantage, making 27-of-39 to the Patriots' 10-of-23.

Central Florida, which entered the tourney with a 12-1 record and a No. 15 national ranking, never got closer than eight points after halftime.  The Warriors held them to 31 percent shooting and outrebounded CF 53-41, thanks to 15 boards from Ivan Aurrecoechea

Devontae Lane scored a season-best 13 points for IHCC and Antonio "Booman" Williams had 12.

Canberk Kus led the Patriots with 19 and Antwan Maxwell Jr. scored 13 and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.

Indian Hills knocked off Mesa at the Hellyer Center in the opening weekend of the season and will try to duplicate that effort in the semis.  Mesa surprised previously unbeaten Salt Lake CC in their first round matchup Thursday and will look to make it back-to-back wins against undefeated squads when they face off against the Warriors on Friday night.
