IHCC Thumps Malcolm X

Shane

Ottumwa -- Fueled by a 25-point effort by Shane Gatling and 24 points from Corey Manigault, Indian Hills drubbed Malcolm X College on Saturday night, 107-54, at the Hellyer Center.  It was the 18th straight victory to begin the season for IHCC.

Gatling picked up a struggling Indian Hills offense in the first half when he nailed 5-of-6 3-pointers over a stretch of around four minutes.  He made 7-of-11 shots from behind the arc and now has 56 threes for the season.

The 6-foot, 9-inch Manigault took advantage of increased playing time, scoring 11 points in the opening half when he made seven straight foul shots, and adding 13 more points after halftime, punctuating his season-best performance with a late 3-pointer.

The third-ranked Warriors were shaky early, missing shots and turning the ball over, but they came alive thanks to Gatling's marksmanship.  Malcolm X had a couple of early two-point leads and tied the score at 11 before IHCC ran off five quick points, the last three on a traditional three-point play by Manigault.  It was 16-14 when Gatling put on his long-range exhibition, hitting shots from all over the floor.  By the time he was finished, the Warriors were up 34-19 and they steadily pulled away from there.

The margin was 29 points at intermission and Indian Hills got consecutive field goals from Antonio "Booman" Williams to begin the second half, starting a 9-0 run.

Devontae Lane scored only two points but handed out 13 assists for the Warriors, who got a 7-point, 11-rebound effort from Javier Valeiras.

Indian Hills shot 58 percent and held the Hawks to 32 percent shooting.  The rebound numbers were 50-21 in favor of the Warriors.

Two road games await IHCC this week, starting Wednesday with a visit to Missouri State-West Plains, ranked 24th in the latest NJCAA Division I poll.  The Warriors handed MS-WP one of their two losses when they met in Ottumwa last month.  The conference season gets underway this Saturday when Indian Hills takes on archrival Southeastern in West Burlington.
